Layer-By-Layer, or normally only LBL is a group of methods that solves the cube in layers. In the basic, beginner LBL method, the solver finishes the layers one at a time: the first layer edges, then corners, then the second layer edges, and finally the last layer. This is the most common method for new cubers to discover on their own. In more advanced LBL methods, you solve layers more efficiently or solve two layers at once. For example, in the Fridrich method, one solves the first two layers simultaneously by forming a cross of the first layer edges, and then filling in four pairs of a corner and an edge into the so-called slots.
3x3x3 LBL Method
There are many 3x3x3 methods that fully or partially use a LBL approach, including CFOP, the method used by most top speed cubers in the world. Three examples of how cubers might approach LBL:

Introductory 3x3x3 LBL
At this stage the novice cuber truly completes each layer one after the other, using few algorithms but taking perhaps over 100 moves.

* Daisy
* Cross
* Bottom layer corners
* Middle Layer edges
* 4-Look Last Layer, sometimes actually more like 8-looks by re-using algorithms

Intermediate 3x3x3 LBL
At this stage the cuber may develop strategies such as keyhole to reduce middle layer moves, as well as learning further last layer algorithms.

* Cross
* Keyhole F2L
* 4-Look Last Layer

Advanced 3x3x3 LBL
The advanced LBL cuber often uses CFOP, employing fast, intuitive F2L techniques and learning many more last layer algorithms to reduce moves and improve speed further.
* Cross
* F2L
* OLL
* PLL

Done as if solving the 3x3 corners using the Layer-By-Layer method. You can use shorter last layer algs because there are no edges that need to be kept in position on a 2x2. You can use any OLL of your choice as long as the corners are in the correct position. There are two options for the last layer in a beginner 2x2 solve:

Hi there!

I hope I'm responding in the correct way -- I'm just editing my original, or was I meant to create a new section?

Anyway ... you have a lot of good points.

Adding puzzle category WOULD create a lot of repetition, so probably not a good idea.
Year as a separate column also a good idea.
Also agree characteristics could be a tricky one. What about simply adding algs and av moves? This might be a more objective way to convey the same info -- after all, lower alg/higher moves tends to be for beginners, whereas higher algs/lower moves tends to be for speedsolving.
Type column I think could be helpful and can be more objective: LBL, corners first, block building etc although some are hybrids.

Thoughts on that?

First Two Layers, or F2L are normally the first two bottom layers of the 3x3x3 cube, or essentially all layers up until the last layer on larger cubes.

The definition is a little different depending on the subject or who you are talking to. Usually, it refers to the part of the CFOP and CFCE methods that solve the first two layers in pairs, excluding the cross step.

2-gen F2L, most pairs (30:42) have the edge sitting in the U-layer having two orientations, it shows R or F colour at the side. If it is the R colour you can solve the pair using only RU and if it is the F colour you can turn the cube (y') and sovle the pair to the back slot using only RU. The only pairs that needs both R and F turns are the six ones with the edge unoriented in the slot, if the edge is oriented in the slot both ways works.
Approaches
Petrus F2L
Another way to solve the 'F2L' is by building blocks, common during the first two layers of the Petrus method.

Fridrich F2L
There are many ways to solve the 'F2L' on a cube. A common system is using the Fridrich method first two layer approach. After solving the cross, a corner-edge pair is paired up, and then inserted into the correct slot. A total of four corner edge (or 'CE') pairs are made and inserted to solve the first two layers.

The concept of pairing up four corner/edge pairs was first proposed by René Schoof in 1981.

Cubo: /* Intermediate Methods */ Changed order of methods to better reflect their popularity (Fridrich, then Petrus, then Roux, etc ..). Also minor grammar edit.

Because of the popularity and relative simplicity of the 3x3x3 cube, there are a large number of methods out there. The most common and fast will be explored in this article.

Basic Methods
Basic methods require very few algorithms and little practice, but they also have a high move count and are very difficult to get fast times with. The fastest times that have been recorded with these methods are around 30 seconds. These methods are good beginner's methods, meaning they are good for teaching people who have never solved a Rubik's Cube before.
*In the Layer-By-Layer method, the solver finishes the layers one at a time. This is one of the most common method for new cubers to discover on their own. To become faster at LBL better techniques such as Keyhole or F2L will speed up the first layers, and learning more algorithms for the last layer will allow it to be solved in fewer steps using the 4 Look Last Layer.
*In the Corners First style, the corners are all solved, and then the edges and centers are filled in. This is a very easy method to learn, and it has many variations.
*In the block building methods the first parts of the solve is done by setting up blocks of some form, a 2x2x3 as in the Petrus method or F2B (first two blocks) as in the Roux method.

Intermediate Methods
Intermediate methods are very popular because they are quite fast without requiring extensive knowledge or memorization. They have a moderate move count (although they can be heavily optimized) and are good for cubers who have mastered a basic method.
*The Fridrich Method is the most popular speedcubing method. First the bottom layer edges are solved, then the first two layers are filled in either using intuition or algorithms, and finally the top layer is solved in two steps: OLL then PLL.
*The Petrus Method is the second-most popular speedcubing method. The cuber creates a 2x2x2 block, expands it to a 2x2x3 block, orients all of the remaining edges, then finishes the first two layers. The last layer is finished in three steps, although many Petrus users elect to finish the last layer with OLL and PLL instead.
*The Roux Method is a hybrid of block-building and corners first methods. Two opposite 1x2x3 blocks are made, then the last four corners are solved (CMLL). The remaining six edges are solved intuitively.
*The Waterman Method is a method based on corners first methods. First cuber solves the first layer, then does the opposite layer's corners (CLL), and finally solves the remaining edges in three steps.
*The ZZ Method is a relatively modern method where the edges are all oriented in the first step, allowing for more fingertricks and zero cube rotations. Last layer edges are pre-oriented, allowing for many options including 1LLL.
*Columns First Methods are a group of methods that in some way build four columns of three pieces each, orients the remaining edges, and permutes the remaining edges.

Advanced Methods
An advanced method requires extensive memorization, understanding of intuitive blockbuilding, or both. Few people have ever mastered these methods, but they are theoretically capable of extremely low move counts and times.
*The Heise Method is a very tricky block-building method that requires no algorithms at all. Four 1x2x2 blocks are created, and then paired up to finish all of the F2L minus two pieces, while also orienting the last layer edges. Then two corner-edge pairs are made and all of the edges are solved along with two corners. Finally the three remaining corners are finished with a commutator.
*The Snyder Method is a very hard to learn method where the cube is solved in stages, using algorithms that simultaneously permute and orient throughout. The F2L is solved using a variety of block building techniques for convenience, and a large number of algorithms are used to solve the last layer in 1 or 2 looks. Generally, the last layer is divided into two stages: 1) solve all edges + one corner, 2) solve remaining corners. And where this 2-look method requires more than 4 turns compared to a direct solve, the solution reverts over to a 1-look direct solve, or an approximation.
*The Human Thistlethwaite method is a human-usable version of the Thistlethwaite algorithm that reduces the cube to subgroups, and ends by solving the cube with only 180 degree face turns.

Partial Methods
There are a couple of methods which only provide a way to solve a part of the cube; a cuber using one of these methods would be able to choose another method to do the other parts of the cube with. Sometimes these partial methods improve the move count of a normal method, and sometimes they just provide a different style that some people may prefer.

*The MGLS Method is one way to solve the last layer plus a corner/edge slot. There are three steps: insert the F2L edge and orient the LL edges, insert the F2L corner and orient the LL corners, and then PLL.
*The ZB Method solves the last layer plus a corner/edge slot in just two steps, but requires hundreds of lengthy algorithms. First the cuber finishes the F2L while orienting the LL edges, and then the cuber solves the entire LL in one step.
** Vandenbergh-Harris (VH) is a method to solve the last F2L slot and orient last layer edges by connecting the last pair in U, then using a single case of ZBLS/ZBF2L. It's a good stepping stone for learning ZBLS.
* Winter Variation (WV) is a method to solve the last F2L slot while orienting corners of the last layer in a single step.
*CLL/ELL is an alternate way to finish the last layer with about the same speed and number of algorithms as OLL/PLL. There are two steps: solve the corners in one step (CLL), and solve the edges in one step (ELL). If you already have the edges oriented, you can modify the method to use CLL algorithms which keep the edges oriented, and then finish the cube with an edges-only PLL.
*TheM-CELL Method is one way to solve the 3x3 cube after solving an F2L-2 (Cross-1 and F2L-1). It has an algorithm count of 96, all for 3TCLL.
This method was proposed by speedsolving wiki user shadowslice e. You can find the thread where it was posted here https://www.speedsolving.com/forum/showthread.php?54872-Immune-System-(solving-method-potential-1LLL).
}}

The Roux Method (French pronunciation: [ʁu]) is a 3x3 speedsolving method invented by Gilles Roux. Unlike the Fridrich and Petrus methods, the inventor of this method has used it to achieve an official sub-15 average. Similarities can be drawn to the Petrus method's block building and the Waterman method's layer-on-the-left and edges-last aspects.

The Steps
1. Build a 1x2x3 block anywhere on the cube.

2. Build a second 1x2x3 block opposite of the first 1x2x3 block, without disrupting the first 1x2x3 block. After this step, there should be two 1x2x3 blocks: one on the lower left side, and one lower right side, leaving the U slice and M slice free to move.

3. Simultaneously orient and permute the remaining 4 corners on the top layer (U-slice). You can use CMLL,COLL, or Corner OLL's (along with the T and Y permutation) to do this.

4a. Orient the 6 remaining edges using only M and U moves (UF, UB, UL, UR, DF, DB need to be oriented correctly).

4b. Solve the UL and UR edges, preserving edge orientation. After this step, both the left and right side layers should be complete.

4c. Solve the centers and edges in the M slice, see Last Six Edges.

: See also: L5E

Pros
*Like the Petrus method, the Roux method uses fewer moves than the popular Fridrich method.
*It is also more intuitive and requires fewer algorithms.
*After the first block is built the rest of the cube can be solved mostly with R, r, M and U moves thus eliminating rotations.
*Statistically it is one of the best methods, as shown by Alex Lau's success in the WCA.

Cons
*Block building can be difficult for a beginner to get used to. The reliance on r and M moves may also be difficult for some people, so much so that cubers who have trouble with M turns should probably not use this as their main method (or better, practice practice practice the M moves). Slice turns can also be slower than using a quarter-turn metric.
*Since the M-slice is used often, especially in the final stages, there is a larger chance of a DNF rather than a +2 if the solver misses the second flick in an M2, or if the solver misses the last M move. It is a DNF because M uses both the R and L face in one.

Improvement
Some Roux users have learned multiple algorithms for each CLL case, each affecting edges in a different way. This allows for manipulation of edge orientation, leading to an easier LSE.

Possibly another improvement is to expand to solving any of the four second blocks. This means that the D-layer colors of the two blocks don't have to match. One negative, if someone has already learned a recognition method for CLL, is that to easily use the full range of second block options, a switch to NMCLL recognition is necessary. Another is that LSE EO is a bit more difficult to recognize in some solves.
