The Megaminx is a puzzle in the shape of a dodecahedron that was first produced by Uwe Meffert, who has the rights to some of the patents. Each of the 12 sides consists of one pentagonal fixed center, five triangular edge pieces and five corner pieces. The corner and edge pieces are arranged in a five-pointed star pattern. It has 1.01 x 10^68 positions on the 12 colour version and 6.14x10^63 positions on the 6 colour version. A variant where the cuts are a little deeper, so that each face has a five-pointed star on it, is known as the Hungarian Supernova, but since it is similar these names are often interchanged.

The way the Megaminx functions is very similar to the 3x3x3: it has fixed centers, edges with two orientations, and corners with three orientations, and each turn moves the same number of edges and corners. Because of this it can be (and usually is) solved with a variant on a 3x3x3 method, either by placing edges and then corner/edge pairs (like the Fridrich method) or simply building a series of blocks (like the Petrus method). It is also possible to finish using some OLL and PLL algorithms. The biggest difference from the 3x3 is that slice moves are not possible and therefore methods that solves edges preserving corners are having much longer algorithms.

The GuHong Cube is a Chinese cube designed by Daqing Bao (包大庆), who is also the designer of Crazy 4x4x4 series. The name DaYan is the pinyin of his username 大烟头(Da Yan Tou) on MF8 and the logo is a Chinese character "头"(Tou).

The edges have an unusual shape and split apart in two pieces, similar to one of the V-Cube 6 internal pieces. The corners have stalks and split into thirds and have two little Y-shaped parts that go into holes that are in the corners to attach the thirds. The centers are bigger and different from a normal DIY. It is noted that one of the sides of the core are smaller than the rest, so it is recommended that you either use a different core or force the screw into the hole. When you take off a layer of the cube, you will see that the inner circumference of empty space is smaller than usual.

The cube is extremely fast and smooth. It is also quiet as well. Many people have said that the cube is uncontrollable and a bit prone to popping. Like the Dayan II, it can cut corners at 45 degrees. The GuHong can also reverse corner cut, which is useful if you overshoot a bit. It is recommended to set the tensions to tight, as it may pop.

Belt Method (also known as Equator or Ring) is a middle-layer-first method for the 3x3 proposed by Denton Holder. It and other middle-layer-first variants have been proposed a number of times, e.g. Ring Method in 2004 by Kyle Bryant.

Steps
1.	Solve the E-Slice

2. Separate the remaining pieces into their respective layers. The corners and the edges are usually done separately, but the order varies. This can be done intuitively.

3. Orient the U and D layer pieces. Doing this step in one look requires far too many algorithms, so it is normally done by first orienting the U layer, and then the D layer. OLL (57 algorithms) can be used for this, though a parity algorithm is needed.

Corner Orientation Parity (To be repeated if it does not work): R U' R' U' R U R' U2 R U' R'

Edge Orientation Parity (At least one unoriented edge in the M Layer): M' U M

4. Permute U and D layer pieces. The one look version takes over 300 cases, so, once again, two look is much more practical. You first correct the parity error (which occurs 50% of the time), and then you use PLL (21 algorithms) on both layers to finish the cube.

PLL Parity- M2 U2 M2

Variants
There are many variants to the method described above. Instead of seperating, orienting and then permuting, you could change the order around. You can do orientation, seperation and then permutation. Another slightly different approach is to orient all edges, THEN solve the belt and continue on.

Conclusion
Overall, Belt method has a reasonably large move count and is not as fast as other speed methods (CFOP, Roux, Petrus, CF etc.)
However, it is a lot of fun and has been used to achieve sub-30.

Cubeaddicted:

This page introduces some tips and techniques to help you solve the cube in as few moves as possible.

The best results can be obtained when all techniques are controlled. It is strongly advised not to follow a strict pattern, for example a speedsolving method. However some algorithms learned from a speedsolving method will give some advantages in some cases. The most useful methods are Heise, Petrus, Fridrich, Roux and ZBLL.

Block Building
Best start for an FMC is block building technique. Try to build a 2x2x2 block then a 2x2x3 block. After the 2x2x2 block you have 3 sides to extend it to a 2x2x3. Explore all of them. After the 2x2x3 block...

Pair Insertion
When inserting Fridrich-pairs in F2L don't get stuck with you speedcubing methods but try some alternatives and check each of them for...

Inverse Scramble
If you can't find a good start to your scramble, you can try inverting the scramble. That means the scramble R F' D2 U becomes U' D2 F R'. Find a good solution based on the inverted scramble, then invert the solution. The inverted solution will solve the original scramble. It looks strange to solve like this, but gives you more chances to find a good start.

Pseudoblocks or Pre-scramble-moves
Like Heise Method you can build pseudo blocks, which are adjacent 1x2x2 blocks or c/e pairs that are not adjacent but need an extra turn to get those blocks at the right color-centre. Solving with pseudo blocks can be very difficult and requires a lot of experience. As an alternative you can replace a pseudo block by a pre-scramble-move to give more oversight over your solve.

NISS
The Normal-inverse-scramble-switch (NISS) technique was introduced in 2009 by Guus Razoux Schultz in the speedsolving forum here: http://www.speedsolving.com/forum/showthread.php?13599-The-FMC-thread/page19&p=258791#post258791
On this forum you can find several good explanations of how it works. Mike Hugley made it pretty understandable with the following description:

Generally, you use premoves to modify a scramble so you can solve it more easily. The most common approach for this is to solve a "pseudo-block" of some sort, where for instance you might put in a corner-edge pair of the wrong color into a 2x2x2 or 2x2x3 block. Then you find the moves necessary to put that corner-edge pair (or whatever) into it's proper location in the solved cube. If you then apply those moves to the solved cube prior to applying the scramble, you'll find that the pseudo-block becomes an actual block. Then you can add those moves to the end of your final solution and it will be solved.

Guus's solution you mention is using "NISS" - his "normal-inverse-scramble-switch" method, where you solve part of the cube with the normal scramble, then when you get stuck, you switch to the inverse scramble and use it, then when you get stuck again, you switch back to the normal scramble, and so on. I love NISS - it's really fun to do! Anyway, when you switch from normal to inverse scrambles, the moves you used at the beginning of the normal scramble solve become premoves to the inverse scramble (and vice-versa). It takes trying it to see how it really works, and it's really quite ingenious.

The best way to understand these is to look at some of the solves that others have done (like the ones in the weekly competitions) and understand how they work. Examples are much more useful than descriptions - this isn't a particularly good description, but maybe it gives you an idea of what's going on.

A pre-scramble move is a move you apply before the scramble and which allows you to find more possible solutions. Of course you must not forget to add the premove at the end of your solution.

Inserted Moves (single)
Sometimes after a promising start you can't find a good continuation. Say you have solved a 2x2x2 block, but after that there's nothing good. By stepping through the solution you might see that at one place there's no 2x2x2-pieces on U, at that place you can try to insert U, U' or U2 and see if a better continuation is possible.

Inserted Algorithms/Commutators
A very powerful technique in FMC is to solve everything except 3-5 corners and then insert 8 move commutators that cycle three corners earlier in the solution. Since there many corner configurations that can be solved in 8 moves often one will cancel moves, and thus one corner cycle will add less than 8 moves to the total solution length. Edge cycles are not used as often since FMC is judged in HTM and edge cycles often involve slice moves that are counted as two moves. Some people use stickers to more easily track the unsolved pieces through the solution.

Freestyle Solving
If you see some opportunity to solve a lot of blocks without any (known) pattern you could try to solve it. When leaving a maximum of 4 edges and 4 corners try to conjugate them to 1 face during a solve. Then use pre-scramble-moves or a second cube to solve that face / LL

LL-algorithms
sometimes you solve a lot of LL blocks using a very short LL algorithm, 8 or 9 moves maximum. Try to learn short LL algorithms in such a way that you know what it does to corners and edges. Start with the length-6 LL-alg, then the three 7-move LL-algs, the five 8-move LL-algs, and so on. You are really an expert when learning all LL-algs up to 10 moves.

A step up from this is to start the alg part from the last slot, LPELL is one such method.

Other Tips
* Do not use moves that turn the cube!

* Use fixed colors for up & front to enhance recognition!

* Better still, look at the centre of the face you are turning, it tells wich side it is ("White" = U and so on), then orientation does not matter anymore.

* Write down promising moves, do not wait till the very end!

* Create a backup solve!

* Learn to scramble fast, it can save a lot of time during a 1-hour solve.

* Bring stickers (for insertions) and extra cubes during a competition.

Edges first, or just EF, is a method where all edges of the cube are solved before the corners.

EF is not well suited for advanced speedsolving, the first step is very easy but the corners needs a unplesant number of moves to be solved after that in most cases. In FMC, when the time to look ahead is of no or little importance it is useful if many corners can be solved together with the edges, then it may be only one or possibly two corners cycles left in the end, that may be solved using insert algorithms.

Substeps (as a beginner method)
* Solve the cross
* Solve 3 E layer edges
* Orient and (then) permute the last layer edges while solving the last E layer edge. This can be done intuitivly
* Rotate the cube so you have at least 2 D layer corners in the D layer and on FUR another D layer corner
* Use RUR'U' (Sexy Move) and D setup moves to solve 3 corners of the D layer. Be sure to use the unsolved corner to fix the edges that may have been affected by the sexy move (if it was not done 3 OR 6 times)
* Turn the cube over so that the 3/4 solved layer is now on top and the unsolved corner is on FUR
* Again use RUR'U' and D setup moves to solve the rest of the corners
* Parity: If the D layer is solved but not the cube you have parity. Repeat sexy move untill the cube is solved exept for 2 corners
* Hold the 2 Corners in D layer and solve them using RUR'U'

Conclusion
The method only needs the sexy move as an algorithm, but it is needed a lot of intuition and knowlegde about the cube. As a speedsolving method though, its move count is way to high.
A blockbuilding approach to solving the 3x3x3, first proposed by Ryan Heise and developed by Michael Gottlieb and Mirek Goljan. The final step involves solving a 'tripod' composed of the three 1x1x2 columns connected to the URF corner piece. The steps are as follows-

1. Build a 2x2x2 block. This is an intuitive step.

2.Build 3 1x2x2 block side by side the 2x2x2 block. This is also an intuitive step.

3. Insert the lat F2L slot.

First Two Layers, or F2L are normally the first two bottom layers of the 3x3x3 cube, or essentially all layers up until the last layer on larger cubes.

The definition is a little different depending on the subject or who you are talking to. Normally it is as above but it may also refer to the part of the Fridrich method that solves the pairs without counting the cross part.

2-gen F2L, most pairs (30:42) have the edge sitting in the U-layer having two orientations, it shows R or F colour at the side. If it is the R colour you can solve the pair using only RU and if it is the F colour you can turn the cube (y') and sovle the pair to the back slot using only RU. The only pairs that needs both R and F turns are the six ones with the edge unoriented in the slot, if the edge is oriented in the slot both ways works.

<br clear=all>
Approaches
Petrus F2L
Another way to solve the 'F2L' is by building blocks, common during the first two layers of the Petrus method.

Fridrich F2L
There are many ways to solve the 'F2L' on a cube. A common system is using the Fridrich method first two layer approach. After solving the cross, a corner-edge pair is paired up, and then inserted into the correct slot. A total of four corner edge (or 'CE') pairs are made and inserted to solve the first two layers.

The concept of pairing up four corner/edge pairs was first proposed by René Schoof in 1981.

<br clear=all>
Approaches

ZB (short for Zborowski-Bruchem after its inventors, Zbigniew Zborowski and Ron van Bruchem) is a very efficient but algorithm-intensive method which is a variation of advanced LBL methods such as the Fridrich method. After solving the F2L minus one corner-edge pair in whatever method the solver wishes, there are just two more steps: ZBLS (originally called ZBF2L), which finishes F2L while simultaneously orienting the edges of the last layer, and ZBLL, which finishes the last layer in one algorithm.

On his webpage, Zborowski claims that his method requires only 40 moves on average, which means that a master of this method should be able to get times that are significantly faster than those possible with Fridrich. Unfortunately, because this method has a total of 300 algorithms or 795 total cases, it would take a very long time to learn the entire method. Very few people (if any) have ever put full ZB into practice.

ZBLL (short for Zborowski-Bruchem Last Layer) is a step of a method which involves solving the entire last layer in one step, assuming that the edges are already oriented. This is part of the ZB method, but it can be useful for any other method which leaves the edges of the last layer oriented after F2L is solved (such as the Petrus method, or ZZ Method).

ZBLL indeed sounds like a very useful step to learn, but the main reason that it is not in wide use is that it involves a massive 177 algorithms (counting inverses and mirrors are the same), or a total of 493 cases (including PLL). Only a handful of people have ever learned this step in its entirety. If you wish to learn it, it is useful to start by learning either OCLL/PLL or COLL/EPLL, so that you will always be able to finish the cube relatively quickly even if you do not yet know the ZBLL case.

Learning Approach
The ZBLL cases are divided into 7 sets: T, U, L, Pi, Sune, Anti-sune, H, and the Pll cases, in which all pieces are oriented. The sets are then divided further into 6 subsets. They are recognized by their COLL case as well as a corresponding edge cycle. Every subset contains 12 cases, which are all different edge cycles possible with the COLL case of that set. Many people recognize ZBLL by looking at the UFR corner and its neighboring stickers. Whether the stickers are adjacent, or opposite allows for a quick recognition. However, this method only works for the T, U and L subsets of ZBLL, because in the other cases the UFR corner is not correctly oriented. Another way to recognize is through blocks of colour or simply the edge cycle.

Edge recognition
For the T, U and L cases (there are 3*6*12=216 algorithms in this set) recognition goes as follows:

1. Recognize the orientation case.

2. Recognize the COLL case.

3. Recognize the edge cycle by looking at the UFR corner and the edge stickers around it.

4. Apply the corresponding algorithm.

Step 3 may look a little complicated, but it's actually not too bad. In total there are 12 cases, but those are recognized by 2 minor sub-cases, of which there are 3:

C: If the FU sticker is the same as the FRU sticker, and if the RU sticker is the same as the RUF sticker.

A: If the FU sticker is an adjacent color to the FRU sticker, and if the RU sticker is an adjacent color to the RUF sticker.

O: If FU and FRU are opposite, and if RU and RUF are opposite.

A case is recognized by the combination of those. First comes the FU/FRU relation, then the RU/RUF relation, divided by a slash. That means there are 9 possibilities with these cases: C/C, C/A, C/O, A/C, A/A, A/O, O/C, O/A, O/O. However, there are 12 cases. That's because the A case can mean 2 stickers. That's why the last 3 cases are known as C/OX, O/CX and OppX. This means that you don't look for the relation between FU/FRU and RU/RUF, but between FU/RUF and RU/FRU. In the C/OX case, FU and RUF are the same, and RU and FRU are opposite to each other. The same goes for the O/CX case, but vice versa. In the OppX case, both FU/RUF and RU/FRU are opposite. This looks like a Z-permutation. Note that all of these cases can be seen as A/A cases at first, but whenever you have an A/A case, you should always look if it isn't the other one.

ZBLS (short for Zborowski-Bruchem Last Slot, earlier called ZBF2L) is a 3x3 speedsolving substep to simultaneously solve the last corner-edge pair in F2L and orient the last layer edges. Originally proposed as part of the ZB method, it can occasionally be useful for methods such as Fridrich or for Fewest Moves.

ZBLS is not as useful on its own as ZBLL, although together they are very fast. The problem is that ZBLS involves 125 algorithms (counting inverses and mirrors as the same algorithm) and has a total of 302 cases to learn. Only a handful of cubers have learned ZBLS in its entirety. VHLS, a two-step method that first makes the last pair and then inserting it while orienting edges, is a subset of ZBLS corresponding to just one of the F2L cases.

Terminology change
ZBLS was originally called ZBF2L; similarly, VHLS was originally called VHF2L. As more last-slot substeps were considered, several notable cubers began to call them all with the LS suffix.

Unfortunately, because this method has a total of 300 algorithms or 806 total cases, it would take a very long time to learn the entire method. Very few people (if any) have ever put full ZB into practice.
ZBLL (short for Zborowski-Bruchem Last Layer) is a step of a method which involves solving the entire last layer in one step, assuming that the edges are already oriented. This is part of the ZB method, but it can be useful for any other method which leaves the edges of the last layer oriented after F2L is solved (such as the Petrus method).

ZBLL indeed sounds like a very useful step to learn, but the main reason that it is not in wide use is that it involves a massive 177 algorithms (counting inverses and mirrors are the same), or a total of 504 cases (including PLL).
