The extended cross (mostly called XCross) is a sub-step that creates the cross and the first pair simultaneously. The idea of a 2x2x2 and the cross combined as two separate phases was first proposed by Anthony Snyder in the 80's. In July 2003 Chris Hardwick proposed the full XCross as a single phase to be planned during inspection.
As an example, perform F R' F' R on a 3x3. If you insert the pair with U R U' R', two LL edges are misorientated. OLL (short for Orientation of the Last Layer) is a last-layer step for 3x3 that orients all last-layer corners and edges in one step. It is the first last-layer step in many speedsolving methods, including the Fridrich Method. OLL is usually followed by PLL.

Terminology
Dot OLL refers to OLL cases with no edge oriented correctly, so named because the center sticker forms a lone dot of the last-layer color. These cases are typically longer and harder to execute than others and are sometimes avoided. For example, cubers who have not learned full OLL can use partial edge control to avoid these cases altogether. Even some cubers who know full OLL avoid these cases for one-handed solving.
OLL Algorithms
Parentheses in an algorithm signify the triggers of the algorithm. For example, [(R U R') (L' U L)] shows two triggers in the algorithm, even though it is the same as [R U R' L' U L].

The areas shaded in gray represent the oriented pieces on the top layer. You can tell if a piece is oriented by looking at the top color of the piece in relation to the top center of the cube. If the piece is oriented, the two colors will be the same.

The bars sticking off to the side of an unshaded piece represent where the sticker that needs to be on top is.

All edges flipped correctly
This subgroup, OCLL (also OLL-C) is used in methods which have oriented the LL edges earlier in the solve, such as ZZ. Solving the OCLL is also the second part of the 2-look OLL.
AUF

AUF is an abbrevation for Adjust Upper Face or Adjust U Face that stems mainly from the freedom of the U-layer in many common 3x3x3 methods. It is an adjustment turn of the upper face, either U, U2, or U' (or possibly no move), often used to prepare the cube for an algorithm or sequence.
Sometimes it is performed before one of the last layer steps, such as PLL or COLL, to speed up recognition.

Example
A cuber might know how to perform an OLL algorithm if the stickers are facing a certain way, and rotate the U layer to match the pattern they're used to.

For example, the moves during the final (OLL) step of Erik Akkersdijk's 7.08 world record were U FRUR'U'RUR'U'F' U2. The boldface moves are AUF moves, to adjust the cube for an OLL algorithm and a PLL skip (respectively).

Notes
Note that Adjust U Layer (AUL) would be a more accurate name, but the abbreviation "AUF" has become standard. It is generally assumed that the rest of the layer turns with a face.

Similar concepts to AUF exist in several methods, but none of them have a comparably widespread name.

Because of the popularity and relative simplicity of the 3x3x3 cube, there are a large number of methods out there. The most common and fast will be explored in this article.

Basic Methods
Basic methods require very few algorithms and little practice, but they also have a high move count and are very difficult to get fast times with. The fastest times that have been recorded with these methods are around 30 seconds. These methods are good beginner's methods, meaning they are good for teaching people who have never solved a Rubik's Cube before.
*In the Layer-By-Layer method, the solver finishes the layers one at a time. This is one of the most common method for new cubers to discover on their own. To become faster at LBL better techniques such as Keyhole or F2L will speed up the first layers, and learning more algorithms for the last layer will allow it to be solved in fewer steps using the 4 Look Last Layer.
*In the Corners First style, the corners are all solved, and then the edges and centers are filled in. This is a very easy method to learn, and it has many variations.
*In the block building methods the first parts of the solve is done by setting up blocks of some form, a 2x2x3 as in the Petrus method or F2B (first two blocks) as in the Roux method.

Intermediate Methods
Intermediate methods are very popular because they are quite fast without requiring extensive knowledge or memorization. They have a moderate move count (although they can be heavily optimized) and are good for cubers who have mastered a basic method.
*The Fridrich Method is the most popular speedcubing method. First the bottom layer edges are solved, then the first two layers are filled in either using intuition or algorithms, and finally the top layer is solved in two steps: OLL then PLL.
*The ZZ Method is a relatively modern method where the edges are all oriented in the first step, allowing for more fingertricks and zero cube rotations. Last layer edges are pre-oriented, allowing for many options including 1LLL.
*The Petrus Method is the second-most popular speedcubing method. The cuber creates a 2x2x2 block, expands it to a 2x2x3 block, orients all of the remaining edges, then finishes the first two layers. The last layer is finished in three steps, although many Petrus users elect to finish the last layer with OLL and PLL instead.
*The Roux Method is a hybrid of block-building and corners first methods. Two opposite 1x2x3 blocks are made, then the last four corners are solved (CMLL). The remaining six edges are solved intuitively.
*The Waterman Method is a method based on corners first methods. First cuber solves the first layer, then does the opposite layer's corners (CLL), and finally solves the remaining edges in three steps.

Advanced Methods
An advanced method requires extensive memorization, understanding of intuitive blockbuilding, or both. Few people have ever mastered these methods, but they are theoretically capable of extremely low move counts and times.
*The Heise Method is a very tricky block-building method that requires no algorithms at all. Four 1x2x2 blocks are created, and then paired up to finish all of the F2L minus two pieces, while also orienting the last layer edges. Then two corner-edge pairs are made and all of the edges are solved along with two corners. Finally the three remaining corners are finished with a commutator.
*The Snyder Method is a very hard to learn method where the cube is solved in stages, using algorithms that simultaneously permute and orient throughout. The F2L is solved using a variety of block building techniques for convenience, and a large number of algorithms are used to solve the last layer in 1 or 2 looks. Generally, the last layer is divided into two stages: 1) solve all edges + one corner, 2) solve remaining corners. And where this 2-look method requires more than 4 turns compared to a direct solve, the solution reverts over to a 1-look direct solve, or an approximation.

Partial Methods
There are a couple of methods which only provide a way to solve a part of the cube; a cuber using one of these methods would be able to choose another method to do the other parts of the cube with. Sometimes these partial methods improve the move count of a normal method, and sometimes they just provide a different style that some people may prefer.

*The MGLS Method is one way to solve the last layer plus a corner/edge slot. There are three steps: insert the F2L edge and orient the LL edges, insert the F2L corner and orient the LL corners, and then PLL.
*The ZB Method solves the last layer plus a corner/edge slot in just two steps, but requires hundreds of lengthy algorithms. First the cuber finishes the F2L while orienting the LL edges, and then the cuber solves the entire LL in one step.
** Vandenbergh-Harris (VH) is a method to solve the last F2L slot and orient last layer edges by connecting the last pair in U, then using a single case of ZBLS/ZBF2L. It's a good stepping stone for learning ZBLS.
* Winter Variation (WV) is a method to solve the last F2L slot while orienting corners of the last layer in a single step.
*CLL/ELL is an alternate way to finish the last layer with about the same speed and number of algorithms as OLL/PLL. There are two steps: solve the corners in one step (CLL), and solve the edges in one step (ELL). If you already have the edges oriented, you can modify the method to use CLL algorithms which keep the edges oriented, and then finish the cube with an edges-only PLL.

Turns Per Second (or TPS) is a measure of the average number of turns per second done during an algorithm or a solve. It is calculated by finding the number of turns (usually in HTM, but also in QTM, STM, or ETM) and then dividing by the time that it took to execute the turns.

Although few people use TPS extensively, it can be an interesting statistic to know exactly how fast someone is turning during an algorithm or even a very fast solve. Once a world record solve has been reconstructed, it is actually possible to look at the TPS and figure out whether the solve was easy (fewer turns than normal) or whether the solver was just turning faster than they usually do. TPS is also useful to figure out how fast a solver must turn to be a certain speed: for example, if a method takes an average of 50 turns and the solver wishes to be under 20 seconds, they must turn at an average of 2.5 TPS or faster.

Cube portal: /* External Links */

One-Handed solving (OH for short) is a type of speedcubing requiring one to solve a puzzle with one hand; you cannot touch the cube with your body or anything other than the table. Competition averages as low as 12 seconds have been achieved on the 3x3x3, with winning times being around 15-18 seconds at a typical competition.

This page is a guide for starting in and training one-handed solving. For a history, see history of one-handed solving.

Which Hand to Use?
While it may appear most obvious to use the dominant hand, both hands work as well for one-handed solving; in fact, the non-dominant left hand is more often used by right-handed cubers, who find R and U moves easier with the left hand. It is also helpful to do OH with a hand that is already used to holding the cube. Either hand, dominant or non-dominant, can be very fast. Use whichever feels comfortable.

Grip and Turning
Most one-handed cubers hold the cube with the thumb and middle finger (and often the ring finger as well) and turn with the remaining fingers. Since one goal of one-handed cubing is to use as many R and U turns (or L and U) as possible as they are much faster and more comfortable, the focus is on how to do these turns easily. There are two main schools of thought on how to accomplish this:
* One way, used by Ryan Patricio, involves the index and ring fingers: the index does U by pushing LUB, U' by pushing BUL, and R' by pushing BUR, and the ring finger does R by pushing BDR. The ring finger is also free to do D and D' moves, so this method can be useful for cubers who use many < L,U,R > or < U,R,D > algorithms.
* The second, used by the top Japanese OH cubers as well as Brian Loftus, involves using only the index and the pinky. The cube is held with the other three fingers; the index does U by pushing FUL and U' by pushing BUL, and the pinky does R by pushing BRD and R' by pushing FRD. Although this method is faster for sequences of only U and R turns, no other turns are possible without rotating the cube or changing the grip, so this method can require more cube rotations. It is however possible to do u and r turns with a slight grip change.
* For M-slice turns you can use the table (this is casually known as Table abuse) to help you do it using your ring finger, or even your pinky or middle.

Training the OH Hand
For most people who want to try OH, their fingers will not initially be anywhere near strong or fast enough to perform algorithms quickly. There are several ways to train the hand:
* Doing specific moves over and over. Just doing RU' or RUR'U' repeatedly can be useful for training the fingers involved in those positions.
* Performing algorithms. Simply solving a lot without a break, or doing OLL or PLL attacks, can train the different types of movements and finger endurance. Slowing down at the end of a solve is a sign that you need more endurance.
* Executing random moves or scrambles. Johannes Laire suggests this method of training; it is useful for exercising the whole hand and not just the fingers that are involved in turns.

OH Finger Stretches Before Averages
You can try to stretch your wrist to keep your fingers from getting relaxed. When your fingers are relaxed, they tend to move slowly, and therefore, a slower solve. But there are stretches you can do on the OH hand. You can try pulling ln your thumb, cracking your knuckles, the possibilities are endless. Try and invent your own to improve your hands.

"One-Handed Amnesia"
Many beginning OH solvers find that when they often forget algorithms while solving one-handed, even ones they know very well two-handed, a phenomenon called one-handed amnesia. This may be because sometimes people learn algorithms using muscle memory, and thus are unable to perform them slowly or one turn at a time. If you want to start OH solving, be prepared to have to relearn some of the algorithms that you thought you knew.

Which helps in saving some time after solving the last layer.

Notes
Note that Adjust U Layer (AUL) would be a more accurate name, but the abbreviation "AUF" has become standard. It is generally assumed that the rest of the layer turns with a face.

Similar concepts to AUF exist in several methods, but none of them have a comparably widespread name.
