This page is about the Gear cube puzzle. For the Gear Cube Extreme or the Anisotropic Gear Cube, see Gear Cube Extreme. For a list of geared puzzles, see :Category:Geared puzzles.

The gear cube (also known as the Caution Cube) is a twistable puzzle in the shape of a cube that is cut two times along each of three axes, as a 3x3x3. Moreover, there are geared edges. That means the edges can turn around themselves. It was invented by Oskar van Deventer (idea of Bram Cohen). It was first produced by Shapeways since 2009, and then by Meffert's since 2010 (for 36€) and it finally got copied by LanLan.

This puzzle has 6 fixed centers (they can't move related to each others), 12 edges, and 8 corners, and a total of 41,472 positions. It has been proven that every position can be solved in 8 or fewer moves in ATM and 12 or fewer in HTM. It's important to note that quarter moves block the cube (only half turns are unprohibited) so QTM has no meaning for this puzzle.

It's not an official event in WCA competition.

The current unofficial world record single speed solve is 2.16 seconds held by Kentaro Nishi. It looks harder but it is actually way easier to solve as compared as with a normal 3x3x3 cube.

Fun facts
* The gear cube was originally called the "Caution Cube" because the solver's fingers could get caught in the gears
The Redi Cube is a three-layered twisty puzzle on which each corner turn moves the three edges around it.

The Redi Cube was designed by Oskar van Deventer in 2009 and released by MoYu in early June 2017. The Redi Cube is based on the Dino Cube, the difference being the Redi Cube has corner pieces.

A mystery puzzle is an unofficial event, featuring a secret puzzle, held as a for-fun event at official competitions. They are usually timed with the Stackmat Timer.

Mystery puzzles were started by Tyson Mao and the Caltech Cube Club in 2006. While briefly hosting the Sunday Contest in 2004, Tyson included one for-fun event each week. This became the inspiring idea for mystery events.
Marcin Kowalczyk is a Polish speedcuber specializing in blindfolded cubing.

Marcin set the multi-blind world record of 41/41 in September 2013, at SLS Świerklany 2013. He set multiple other MBLD records before this. He also has the 3BLD European record single of 21.17 and average of 25.45.

He attempted to get a 46/46 Multi-BLD WR three times at the World Championship 2017, but was unsuccessful with a 31/46 60:00.00, 40/46 59:27.00, and 30/46 59:39.00. He took second place at this World Championship.

His record had been the second longest-standing world record in the WCA at 1,589 days, only after Minh Thai's 7,749-day Rubik's cube world record, until it was taken by Mark Boyanowski on 24 March 2018 at Keep Portland Quiet 2018.

LSE, also called L6E, short for Last Six Edges, is a possible last step in 3x3 speedsolving that solves the M-slice centers and edges (UF, UB, DF, DB) together with UL and UR edges. It is the last step of the Roux Method and the Ortega Method.

Possible approaches
LSE can be solved in various ways; Gilles Roux himself, the inventer of the Roux Method, advocates a flexible/semi-intuitive approach to LSE without a strict division into substeps. The optimal approach is likely a combination of the approaches below.

Layers-based approach
* 1. centers, BD, and FD
* 2. ELL
This layer-based approach seems out of place in any method ending with LSE.

Original Roux
* 1. Orient centers and edges
* 2. Permute UR and UL edges
* 3. Permute the M slice

The following two approaches are commonly used in Corners first methods.

Corners First approach 1
* 1. Solve UL or UR
* 2. Insert UL/UR while orienting the M slice
* 3. Permute the M slice

Corners First approach 2
* 1. Solve both UL and UR
* 2. Orient and permute the M slice

Reduction to L5E has been proposed as an experimental approach.

L5E
* 1. Centers and BD
