Blockbuilding
There are a couple of techniques which come to mind for improving you blockbuilding and influencing later steps and such.

Influencing the second block

Influencing the second block during the first block may not sound very specific or important, but it's crucial to get your times as low as possible. Here are a few cases, experiment with them, then make some of your own:

Making the second block not too inefficient

The second block in Roux is usually where we all get frustrated with high movecount, and feel there's not much to do about it- some cases for the second block are really annoying. You can try to apply Multi-slotting to reduce cases. There also are many cases where it may look like it'll take many moves, but it won't. Here are some cases which may not be immediately apparent in solving.

Corners
KCLL is what coms to mind here. It is basically influencing edge orientation while solving the U corners. Notice it's not necessarily solving EO, but influencing it. Sometimes solving EO may be more trouble than just influencing, say, a 4 flip then simply doing M'UM'. This is why it helps to know multiple algs for each case.

You can change EO by just inserting a slice move before an alg. A very obvious case is if you got a Sune case with UF and UR flipped. If you insert the M' before it, to make r U R' U R U2 r', you flip the edges, with literally no extra moves. This comes in handy as some EO cases take many moves to execute, like 2 flips or the 6-flip.

OLLCP can be applied here too. And if DF and DB are oriented you can solve Eo easily during CMLL.

LSE
Non-matching centres: allowing free centre orienation from the beginning of LSE

You were always told to orient your centres first before doing EO. But sometimes, it's useful NOT to, or to make centres free. You see, an edge that is not an L/R edge is oriented if it has the same orientation as the centres. Whilst the L/R edges will be oriented if you have your U/D colour on top/bottom. So this leads to some fun...

Non-matching centres: misorienting centres to ease EO

Here it's different. You orient your centres beforehand but then use the property to your advantage to ease EO. Just look at these tasty moos:

Orientation for this is just M, how delightful!

Orientation for this is just M'/M.

Feel free to delete this or merge with an advanced CFOP page (which doesn't exist but I've seen to be linked to from other articles). I just thought it'd be nice to document some advanced techniques in the Roux method.

Also, I am not experienced in writing wiki articles so I apologise for my shabby uh... ya no.. grammar and ways of saying stuff.
-5BLD

If this Advanced Roux Techniques page is to exist, a section on LSE tricks would be great. But, there's a difference between not orienting the centers early and taking advantage of a new center orientation after you've seen the edges. The beginning of your section describes the former, while your image shows the latter.--Athefre 13:58, 24 December 2011 (EST)

Yes. You're right. The reason I've 'merged' it is simply because I'm slowly building each section up. Of course I personally have a love of LSE tricks so I will slowly separate the section into larger chunks and write my discoveries in more detail, if that made sense.
So this leads to some fun.

Influencing the second block
Influencing the second block during the first block may not be very specific or important, but it's crucial to get your times as low as possible. Here are a few cases, experiment with them, then make some of your own:

Making the second block not too inefficient
Some cases for the second block are really annoying. You can try to apply Multi-slotting to reduce cases. There also are many cases where it may look like it'll take many moves, but it won't. Here are some cases which may not be immediately apparent in solving.
Thom Barlow is a British speedcuber from Manchester, United Kingdom. He is the inventor of the K4 method, a non-reduction 4x4 speedsolving method. Thom is a co-host of the Podcast.

Thom averages sub-11 with his main method, Roux, which makes him one of the fastest Roux solvers. Additionally, he is known for his wide speedcubing knowledge, having done sub-20 singles using 20 different methods.

Thom is active under the username Kirjava (or simply "kir") on the Speedsolving Forums. At the same time that he contributes frequently to speedcubing theory in such threads as Random Cubing Discussion, he is well known for his snide/immature/off-the-wall/insulting/sarcastic posts. For these stunts he is hated by some and adored by as many others. He has a three-page-long infraction list.

Thom is a member of Team #.

The Roux Method (French pronunciation: [ʁu]) is a 3x3 speedsolving method invented by Gilles Roux. Unlike the Fridrich and Petrus methods, the inventor of this method has used it to achieve an official sub-15 average. The Roux Method is influenced by the Petrus method's block building and the Waterman method's layer-on-the-left and edges-last aspects.

The Steps
1. Build a 1x2x3 block anywhere on the cube.

2. Build a second 1x2x3 block opposite of the first 1x2x3 block, without disrupting the first 1x2x3 block. After this step, there should be two 1x2x3 blocks: one on the lower left side, and one lower right side, leaving the U slice and M slice free to move.

3. Simultaneously orient and permute the remaining 4 corners on the top layer (U-slice). You can use CMLL,COLL, or Corner OLL's (along with T and Y permutation) to do this.

4. Orient the 6 remaining edges (UF, UB, UL, UR, DF, DB need to be oriented correctly).

5. Solve the left and right layer edges. After this step, both the left and right side layers should be complete.

6. Solve the centers and edges in the M slice, see Last Six Edges.

See also: L5E

Pros
Like the Petrus method, the Roux method uses fewer moves than the popular Fridrich method. It is also more intuitive and requires fewer algorithms. After the first block is built the rest of the cube can be solved with R, r, M and U moves thus eliminating rotations.

Cons
Block building can be difficult for a beginner to get used to. The reliance on r and M moves may also be difficult for some people, so much so that cubers who have trouble with M turns should probably not use this as their main method (or better, practice practice practice the M moves). Slice turns can also be slower than using a quarter-turn metric.

One-Handed solving (OH for short) is a type of speedcubing requiring one to solve a puzzle with one hand; you cannot touch the cube with your body or anything other than the table. Competitions averages as low as 14.76 seconds have been achieved on the 3x3x3, with winning times being around 20–21 seconds at a typical competition.

This page is a guide for starting in and training one-handed solving. For a history, see history of one-handed solving.

Which Hand to Use?
While it may appear most obvious to use the dominant hand, both hands work as well for one-handed solving; in fact, the non-dominant left hand is more often used by right-handed cubers, who find R and U moves easier with the left hand. It is also helpful to do OH with a hand that is already used to holding the cube. Either hand, and dominant or dominant, can be very fast. Use whichever feels comfortable.

Grip and Turning
Most one-handed cubers hold the cube with the thumb and middle finger (and often the ring finger as well) and turn with the remaining fingers. Since one goal of one-handed cubing is to use as many R and U turns (or L and U) as possible as they are much faster and more comfortable, the focus is on how to do these turns easily. There are two main schools of thought on how to accomplish this:
* One way, used by Ryan Patricio, involves the index and ring fingers: the index does U by pushing LUB, U' by pushing BUL, and R' by pushing BUR, and the ring finger does R by pushing BDR. The ring finger is also free to do D and D' moves, so this method can be useful for cubers who use many < L,U,R > or < U,R,D > algorithms.
* The second, used by the top Japanese OH cubers as well as Brian Loftus, involves using only the index and the pinky. The cube is held with the other three fingers; the index does U by pushing FUL and U' by pushing BUL, and the pinky does R by pushing BRD and R' by pushing FRD. Although this method is faster for sequences of only U and R turns, no other turns are possible without rotating the cube or changing the grip, so this method can require more cube rotations. It is however possible to do u and r turns with a slight grip change.
* For M-slice turns you can use the table (this is casually known as Table abuse) to help you do it using your ring finger, or even your pinky or middle.

Training the OH Hand
For most people who want to try OH, their fingers will not initially be anywhere near strong or fast enough to perform algorithms quickly. There are several ways to train the hand:
* Doing specific moves over and over. Just doing RU' or RUR'U' repeatedly can be useful for training the fingers involved in those positions.
* Performing algorithms. Simply solving a lot without a break, or doing OLL or PLL attacks, can train the different types of movements and finger endurance. Slowing down at the end of a solve is a sign that you need more endurance.
* Executing random moves or scrambles. Johannes Laire suggests this method of training; it is useful for exercising the whole hand and not just the fingers that are involved in turns.

OH Finger Stretches Before Averages
You can try to stretch your wrist to keep your fingers from getting relaxed. When your fingers are relaxed, they tend to move slowly, and therefore, a slower solve. But there are stretches you can do on the OH hand. You can try pulling ln your thumb, cracking your knuckles, the possibilities are endless. Try and invent your own to improve your hands.

"One-Handed Amnesia"
Many beginning OH solvers find that when they often forget algorithms while solving one-handed, even ones they know very well two-handed, a phenomenon called one-handed amnesia. This may be because sometimes people learn algorithms using muscle memory, and thus are unable to perform them slowly or one turn at a time. If you want to start OH solving, be prepared to have to relearn some of the algorithms that you thought you knew.

In one-handed speedsolving, table abuse is the technique of frequently using the table to get unstuck or to more easily execute a move. Roux OH solvers are especially known for their table abuse for M-slice turns and have turned it into a veritable style.

The term was originally negative. Indeed, the legality of table abuse was a common question for several years (when?), although it has never appeared in the WCA regulations.

Angles
Many people ask what angle to place the cube on the table. Most Roux solvers press on the DR edges at a 45 degree angle onto the table.

Another way to do it is to lean on the FR edge at a 45 degree angle. An example of someone who uses this is Alex Lau, as seen in the video linked below.
Stuff to say that doesn't require rambling
I'm a British speedcuber, averaging sub-12 with the Roux method, making me one of the
fastest solvers using the method. I hold the SpeedBLD UWR, with 9.18 seconds using the Roux method.

My username for both SS and Youtube is 5BLD, don't ask me why. I don't even do 4BLD.

I'm currently 6th in the UK for 3x3, and 7th in the UK for one-handed.

How I began
The first time I saw a cube was back in 2008 when I saw my friend solving it in class.
In February 2011 I bought my first cube and started trying to solve it. I eventually did,
by writing down short algs and figuring out which pieces they affected, finding that
'break and restore' strategy, which I now know are commutators. I must've gotten lucky as
I didn't need to do anything to the edges.... and I worked out corners- only algorithms that didn't destroy the edges.

Of course, I couldn't do it again after that, and gave in to the temptation of the solution book, but still using the first steps of my 'method'.
Methods
The main methods I use are:
* 2x2 Speed: Guimond/Ortega/EG
* 2x2 Blind: Old Pochmann
* 3x3 Speed: Roux (Full CMLL)
* 3x3 Blind: M2/Old Pochmann
* 3x3 One handed: Roux
* 3x3 With Feet: Roux/ "'Petrus
* 3x3 FMC: Heise/Freestyle
* 4x4 Speed: K4/Meyer/Method of Methods (my own method, but I gave it a silly name.)
My 4x4 method
It's called Method of Methods just because my friend Josh suggested it. However! It's not based on any methods at all. Well it's loosely based around the Roux method and Stadler and Yau. I will explain in detail below if I can be bothered.
