[WR] Yiheng Wang 0.78 2x2 WR Average

I have solved the cube myself since 1980, and competed in the WCA since 2005.
I have participated as both competitor and judge at several Rubik cube WC.
And I consider this a serious case.

My honest opinion is that it is very strange to invalidate this record after this long time. There has to be some rule about the time within which to be able to invalidate records, really.

Also, do all records in the future have to be on film to count? Because, how else will you be able to determine if someone used a sliding stop? Will someone review Yiheng's 3x3 record now to see if he made sliding stops there as well? How will this end...

I was also around at the time when the event "Rubriks Magic" was removed from the WCA because it was so fast to solve that it became difficult to determine if the competitor stopped the time correctly or not. If I remember correctly, the average record ended in 0.86 seconds before this event was removed, which is about the same times as 2x2 is at today. Is it time to do the same with the 2x2 and simply remove the event?

(It's even faster than 2x2!) They removed the event because it was getting repetitive every single solve, rather than the event getting too fast and too close, but even if that was the case there are still 5 people with sub 5 avgs rather than 45 for the magic event
Also, idk what's considered too fast, but master magic ended with a 1.75 avg and got removed for the same reason

I don't think they will remove 2x2 because it's getting too fast

WCA already has, and as a result, one of his solves (a 3.38) is penalized

I feel like we hate on Yiheng too much. We have to remember he’s just barely like 11-12 years old, yet he put in a lot of work to be one of the fastest 3x3 solvers in the world. I think he developed sliding not realizing it went against some regulations. However, us humans are natural made to test and push things as far as we can until someone snaps, so IDK. What I will say is that hopefully the penalty’s are a wake up call to push his TPS and lookahead/planning as far as he can to be the fastest. After all, that’s what most speedcubers strive to become. And if not, then we just gotta put our hands together for the speedcubers of the future.

There is some speculation going on that his coaches or someone else told him to slide without him knowing it is illegal

At the time when Magic was remowed from WCA the biggest problem was that some people stopped the timer with their wrists without first releasing the puzzle.

If the WCA has started to review all of Yiheng's recorded solutions to disqualify the times he stopped the timer incorrectly, then of course they must do the same to all the other competitors!

2x2 though is also done by a lot of people (especially among the young) as it is easy to learn, so taking out a popular event might be a problem.

The WCA is not reviewing timer STOPS. They are only reviewing STARTS.

I think speedcubing as a hobby as grown competitive enough that yes, it should be on film. I would be extremely suspicious of any (speed) world record not on film. Yusheng Du's 3.47 single was only accepted by the community after the security cam footage came out. Some people disagree with me but I think the recording requirement is not too much to ask for as everyone has a phone now.

I think a solution like 4-pad is a good complementary solution to video analysis, it will help keep solves in check when videos fail.

To add on to your point it would probably be fairly easy to standardize having a film record in all competitions, there are a lot of webcams for <$25 that film at 1080p and assuming the delegates have the drive space for the video files (or have the files uploaded to the WCA Servers) with ~4 cameras focusing in 2-4 tables you could pretty easily have a film record of every solve in competition.

I agree with some of you, his coaches are teaching him illegal things
