Should the cubes be arranged as a big square/rectangle or being allowed to be arranged in packs is fine?

Many of the current WB attempts had arrangements of packs done before the attempt started. I guess it is ok, but for uniformity I suggest to make cube arrangement as a giant big rectangle.

I think it makes sense to do whatever is practical, since little details like this vanish in importance for such large attempts.

Actually if you require a single big square, probably your idea of 2000 cubes becomes impossible because no one has arms long enough to reach the cubes in the middle (at least not without climbing onto the table to get to them)! 😄

And I have often wondered if the rule should be changed to be a cube of cubes instead of a square of cubes for really big attempts anyway.

That is an interesting idea, but it is inevitably going to happen that someone accidentally knocks over their 'cube'. There would be no way to know during the attempt whether accidental moves have been done to some cubes.

Anyway, for old style MBLD, I don't think it matters how the cubes are placed, as it is unofficial (just like scrambling the cube yourself etc. isn't fraudulent when solving at home).
