My friend is unsure of what 3x3 he should get. He currently uses a store bought Rubik's brand cube and averages around 1:10 seconds. He has all but 2 algs memorized for 2 look OLL and PLL. What should he get?

Need some help getting into speedcubing

Hi, I'm Brody,
I am new to speed cubing and this forum and I would like to know where I should start speed cubing. From the reviews I watched I would like to get the Dayan 2x2 and the Dayan Zanchi 2013 3x3.
I also know that I will need lube (not WD-40). I don't have a cube yet so I don't plan on learning anything yet. Can anyone tell me if the cubes above are good to start with and any recommendations for lubrication? Also I am new to the forum so I hope this is a good place to post this. Sorry if it is not!

Thank you in advance,
-Brody

I woulden't consiter myself a newbie.. but not an expert either... (average about 35 or so).. ok so I would sugest the generic lube here: http://thecubicle.us/assorted-regular-silicone-lube-p-61.html and I would say get weight two. As far as cubes go... I got a zanchi.. honestly, I am not too pleased with it personally.. I lubed and tensioned it... just not as good as people say.. but maybe I got a deformed one or something... a lot of people like it.. so you might want to try it.. as far as 2x2, I would say the Moyu Lingpo, Or the WitTwo.. I have both and both are good

The Fangshi Shuang Ren is a great speedcube for beginners, and experts. Don't lube it or tension it the moment you get your hands on it; that's a mistake many people make. Once you get it, it should be fast enough. You may even think it's too fast. Break it in well, and get used to it. Once you feel like the cube simply needs to be lubricated/tensioned (and you will know when that time is), then go for it.

On a side note, since you're a beginning speedcuber, I recommend you learn Roux. It requires very little algorithms; if you ever choose to switch to Fridrich (a more popular but *cough* less cool method) you'll already know a lot of the 2-look OLL algorithms and two of the 2-look PLL algorithms from CMLL.
EDIT: As for 2x2, learn Ortega.
Good luck!

The cubes you mentioned are very good, but when starting out with sped cubing, they might be a bit too fast or uncontrollable. That's for you to decide, though. For lubrication, there's a myriad of great lubes. The Cubicle sells great lube. Lubix is known for being great, but pricey. Although, if you live anywhere near a hobby shop, I can nearly guarantee that they will have some sort of Differential oils and shock oils. Traxxas lubricant is well known in the world of rc racing and speed cubing. Traxxas 50k is basically lubix but less expensive.

Thank you cygorx,
I have a question though. Can I start with a Dayan Zanchi 3x3 and 2x2? I will look into the Fangshi Shuang Ren.
Jim which cubes are you talking about the Fangshi or the Dayan?
Thank You,
-Brody

Learn the *cough*clearly superior*cough* Fridrich method. :D
It's real easy, man, you just turn the faces.
Sometimes...
Things just...
Turn.

Thank you All! I think I'm gonna go with the Dayan Zanchi 3x3 and Dayan 2x2. If I stick with this sport I will definitely try the Fangshi down the road.

well, I'm thinking of buying a aosu.
but, I've heard some sayings that aosu cores are so bad
that the screws are sometimes untightned while solving.

so, I have two questions.

1. does weisu core fit aosu??

2. is there any solution for aosu core/screws being untightned by itself??

I have not had any problems with my aosu. I highly recommend it and I don't know if the Weisu core fits. The aosu is my main.

So I'm going to get a Ghost Cube, but I'm stuck deciding between the silver-on-black and the white-on-black (*stickers* on *body color*). Both look really nice, but I'd like some outside input since I'm kinda neutral about which one I get. Here's a picture, and I'm only interested with the two on the bottom right.
