Hello fellow cubers!

I wanted to share an exciting new project I’ve been working on: my very own book dedicated to speedcubing.

My name is Julien; I’m 44 years old and from France. My best unofficial 3x3 solve is 13.5 seconds—not fast enough to compete with the best, but fast enough to fuel my passion! For years, I’ve been looking for ways to contribute to our community. A while back, I even tried creating an anthem for cubers (here’s the link!)… though, let’s be honest, it didn’t exactly make waves! 😅

But I never gave up on the idea of contributing in my own way. Early this year, I decided to sit down and write one of the first books entirely dedicated to speedcubing. This isn’t a book about the history of the Rubik’s Cube or a guide on how to solve the 3x3; it’s a book truly written for us, speedcubers.

After a few months of work, the first French version, Nous sommes les cubeurs (We Are the Cubers), came to life. The book gathers 94 pages of anecdotes, historical moments, jokes, and stats—all the things that make our passion so unique. It was distributed by the French store AtoutCubes. At first, I was a bit nervous about promoting it, but after around fifty copies sold, I took the time to read through the readers’ feedback. Here are a few highlights:

  • "My son loved it and laughed a lot at the jokes."
  • "Enjoyable to read… good quality content, but a bit short for the price."
  • "I really enjoyed reading this book, full of stats, competition results, with comments, analysis, and funny, sometimes incredible, anecdotes. It’s definitely not a book for the general public. Less than 100 pages is a bit pricey... but I don’t regret the purchase at all, and it was a fun read!"
The feedback was encouraging, though many felt it could have had more content. So, I went back to work! This new version is fuller, with even more anecdotes, statistics, and portraits. And to reach more readers, I translated it into English! The English version, We’re the Cubers, packs about 130 pages and 70 illustrated articles—condensed to 121 pages to keep printing costs down.

Right now, I’m waiting for my partner to release this V2, but I couldn’t wait any longer to share it with the community. Hence, this post today!

--- update ---
Hi, here is the link to the 2 versions of this book:

I’m sharing some photos of the French version and examples of articles from the English version below. I hope this will catch the interest of some of you!

For the curious, other authors have also explored the theme of cubing: Tokita Shigure with the manga Gal&Cube and Peter Raymundo with his comic Lucky Scramble.

If you love cubing and enjoy reading, I hope this book will bring you as much joy as it did for me while writing it!

If you’re interested, I’d be happy to share the link to the store as soon as it’s available.

Happy reading, everyone, and I look forward to discussing with you all!

Hello,

Thanks for your comments. You're right, some of the illustrative pictures have been generated by AI.

As an amateur writer, I spent a lot of time considering using real photos, but I wasn’t sure if it was allowed or if I would run into image rights issues. Additionally, hiring a professional illustrator seemed way too expensive. In the end, I tried a version of the book without illustrations, but it felt much duller to me. That’s why I decided to keep these AI-generated photos.

However, all the content and infographics were created by my own hands.

You’re actually the fourth person to comment on this since I decided to showcase these images. I didn’t think it would matter so much.

This english book hasn’t been printed yet. Do you prefer a version without images rather than one with AI-generated images?

Thanks for the feedback!

I'm not sure how this works, but would it be possible to have a professional illustration for only the cover for a cheaper price? The other pictures, while clearly AI don't stand out too much but I think a lot of people might be put off by the AI-generated image on the cover.

Maybe it's a good idea. I'll think about it.

I think it looks great, really well done!
The front cover is a bit cutesy, but I don't have a problem with any of the images personally, they have their own charm. Do we really need another cube book with just a picture of a 3x3 on the front?! (*I would check for illegal cube patterns though, like the blue/blue on p.106, it's a bit of a howler.)
The length looks OK; I recently bought a "book" that a friend of mine self-published via Amazon which was only 36 pages so this looks like there's decent value there. You could probably pad it out with a solution guide if you thought that was a problem.
You mentioned a link to a store, but where will it be available? If it's not on Amazon, that will severely limit your reach.
Anyway, great work and best of luck with it!

I'd prefer not having the ai generated images.

Maybe it's a good idea. I'll think about it.

You can get an okay cover from someone on Fiverr (or a similar platform) for $10. I think using smaller, AI-generated decorative images inside the book is less likely to turn people off than having one on the cover. If you spent months writing the book, spending $10 on a cover seems like a no-brainer, to be honest!
