It's how the tests in my science last year were. The midterm was so poorly written that I managed to get the highest grade in my class with a 79, so it became 100. My friend scored 71 but walked out with a 92

I think curve is perfectly fair in certain scenarios. For example: In college, if your professor sucks and only cares about research, then everybody will do bad on tests. Even if you "study your butt off" which in some cases involves 5+ hours a day (which I think is probably more than you but it may not be) you can still do "bad" on test with 70s like @baseballjello67 mentioned and curve will save some people from working insanely hard and only getting a C or a B.

On the other hand, if the class isn't that hard and you can get decent scores without studying that much, curve doesn't matter as much since the median/mean will already be higher anyway.

For us, it doesn't apply to any final exams. For the exams that play a bigger role (I guess the SAT doesn't anymore for college stuff, but I'll add it nonetheless), like the SAT, ACT, and any private exams you take outside of school (extracurriculars, AMC8, AMC10A, AMC10B, AMC 12) don't use it either. Also, only a few school districts use that system anymore. I switched schools before 8th grade so that rule doesn't apply to me anymore.

Also, just because we use the grading curve doesn't mean that school is easy. I've been to both public schools and a British school, and they're similar difficulty. Last school year (7th grade/Year 8) I had maybe an hour-1.5 hours of homework. Now I usually work until 11pm, (including a cricket/math class most days). School isn't "easy" in the US
