I've been out of the cubing game for quite a few years now, and I can see that things have changed a lot. I got out of the cube game right before the V-cubes came out, and now I see that they are doing pretty well, as well as a bunch of other manufacturers, but now it's a bit confusing as what the best options are. Does anyone mind filling me in? Is EastSheen still around? Did V-cubes perform like they were advertised? What about all the new 3x3 manufacturers?

Anyone willing to fill me in? I'd be very grateful.

Most popular big cubes companies are MoYu and Shengshou.

Welcome! As far as 4x4 and 5x5 Moyu is the best, and 6x6 and 7x7 Moyu is kind of tied with ShengShou. For 3x3 it's mostly Moyu, but the gans is also getting popular.

V-Cubes performed far better than expected. I got the V-5, 6 and 7 right after they came out. I never owned an Eastsheen, but the V-5 was way ahead of anyone else on the market at the time. But a few years later they found themselves cracking down on "knock-off" puzzles hard. Puzzles like the Dayan Guhong got caught in their wake. Then there was controversy surrounding how they treated fans. The argument has been made that they were doing what any company would do to protect themselves from patent violations and subsequent scrutiny, but in the process they lost a lot of respect from the speedcubing community. The puzzle world, in general, still likes what they're doing, but for the most part, we have moved on.

You didn't miss much. Just thinking about my old Eastsheen 4x4 makes me cringe.

Hah. Glad to hear it. My Rubik's 4x4 wasn't actually that bad, so was never tempted to try anything else out.

And Tucker, you should definitely try out a Moyu cube. Like... any of them.

Where to begin
1)EastSheen mechanism became pretty much obsolete. IIRC more and more companies started to pop up, QJ, Maru, etc and were producing better (for that time) 2x2s-4x4s. V-Cubes pretty much took over 5x5s however. Then after that ShengShou showed up and took over 4x4 to 7x7. Then Dayan come around for super awesome 3x3s then 2x2s then 4x4s and were promised bigger cubes but never delivered. A bunch of other companies try to get into the game but nothing noteworthy. Then MoYu showed up and took over everything.

2)V-Cubes were good. Really good. Times were dropping fast thanks to them. But of course better cubes came out.

3)Where to begin. Since the last I heard of masterthecube.com it was still in the age of Type (whatevers). A brief history would be like...Those companies tried their hardest to make better cubes, then Dayan showed up with the GuHong and pretty much changed the standard of cube designs. After that more and more people were designing cubes, again nothing noteworthy until Moyu came around and just took over. Also spray lubes kinda became useless thanks to more viscous lubes, shock oil, diff oil, etc.

btw I'm curios what company owns type B? I know which companies owned type A, C-F.

also the latest type C (C5 V2) and Type C 2x2 v1 (wittwo) Under witteden are the only ones that are actually decent by todays standards, every other type_ cube are really outdated. (unless you count the Yj "Long" cubes as type D because YJ owned type D. Also YJ owns moyu so technically
type D rules the market kind of.) (and the new diansheng 3x3 as type E)

Also Fangshi cubes are nice if you like crispy cubes, they were the first that actually competed with Dayan. and Yuxin released a 3x3 and 4x4 that are really good.

and magic and master magic got removed as events from the wca but skewb got added. also 3x3 WR single is Matts Valks 5.55 second
