I just got a Meffert's 4x4 a couple of days ago, and in that short period of time it has started feeling very loose. I haven't had any pops, but I overturn constantly. The whole cube feels kind of rattly which is somethign I wasn't expecting based on reviews I've read of it. Is this normal at all? And is there a way I could tighten it up? I see a single screw in the core, but I haven't done anything to it yet.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Unless they've changed it, tightening the screw in Meffert's cores won't do anything. But you may as well try. If you have a spare qj core or mini qj core (these are adjustable), either will fit in the place of your current core.

I don't have either, but perhaps I'll get one if all else fails. Any idea why it would be so loose?

Maybe you overlubed you cube , try to dry the lube and lube again .
If It's loose again , try a different lube .
I think lubix would work the best .
