Method Library - A complete history of methods, techniques, and more

I have spent the last three years and around 400-500 hours researching the various methods and techniques to form the complete story of their origin and development over time. I have compiled everything into a website called the Method Library. It provides the true origin of CFOP, LBL, the Roux method's development since its proposal, the origin of each aspect of our standard notation, and much more on ~30 methods and techniques. Did you know that the F2L pair technique was 100% developed in 1979, by a group before those who are currently credited? Did you know that David Singmaster isn't, and never claimed to be, the creator of Cross and LBL? There are even more surprises and even more depth on the website.

If you want to use this information and want to update various sources, I ask that you credit me. Just simply state that the information was uncovered by me and link to the website.

There is more to be added. Right now the site has almost every major 3x3 method (~30). There are still more methods to be added (Zipper and others) and information on additional techniques, Big Cubes, and more. The site is in list form, showing the major points mostly in chronological order for each method and technique. A written form version is coming soon in a different format.

You did what I never had the dedication to do: go through and properly credit the inventors (like in the sciences)

This is fantastic! 😍

Early cubing history is disappearing from the web over time, and I'm glad to see so many original sources available in one place.
I'd love to see the wiki citing some of these pages fore more context.

(Also, I'd argue MGLS is missing, but then again less than a dozen people in a world would fuss you for that. 😜)

Thank you.

Yeah, there is definitely more that I want to add. The steps section could be filled out a lot more. One big thing is that I need to add is the ZBLL history that I wrote about before.

MGLS is another good one. If you have any information, links, and screenshots that you could share, that would be helpful. Are there any private conversations between you and Makisumi that you could share? Or anything that just is no longer publicly saved? I can of course do my usual research and use archive.org and other methods. Just wondering if you have information that could help out.

Hmm, I don't seem to have a record of conversations with Macky before June 2007. I'm not sure archive.org has the original announcement, but I'll DM you the speedsolvingrubikscube thread from June 15, 2007. (This might also be available in the archive.)

Other resources include:

Thanks for the various links. I will try to update the site a little later. I do have the Yahoo Group saved to my computer. It has been very useful and also constantly brings back memories of when we were gathered there.

I updated the site to include:

  • MGLS
  • Squall
  • TruSRU
  • 2GR
  • Transformation
  • Union Principle
I also added a new page that lists all of the creators and their respective developments. It is likely missing a few big things, so let me know if there is something that you think should be added.

1. can't find OLS, WV or ZBLS

2. also, can you publish that kirjava developed OLLCP hax and learned all of it?

original post -> https://www.speedsolving.com/threads/ollcp-hax.31506/

wiki archive -> https://web.archive.org/web/20140214063401/https://www.speedsolving.com/wiki/index.php/OLLCP_(hax)

3. also, jessica fridrich talked about pseudo slots on her site waaaaay back then

http://www.ws.binghamton.edu/fridrich/system.html#second

but I can't seem to find the quote. maybe someone could help.

4. there is also a not very well known method I remeber now that only exists on the archives, it was by statchu korrik. it consisted of:

first layer with block building planned on inspection
first edge + eo
second edge + ep
third edge + co
fourth edge+ cp

or something like this

EDIT: just found it under L2L. couldn't remember the name.

For sure, there's a lot to be added. The three you mentioned are popular, so I'm sure others would appreciate having those as well. And yeah, it has been a long time and a lot of work. As mentioned on the site, this is all part of another project. So the time includes that.

Thank you. I checked out your new requests. If Fridrich talked about pseudo slotting somewhere, that would be really interesting to update on the site. I haven't seen it in the Yahoo group where she was most active. People were always linking to Hayden's site instead for the technique.
