So ive been wondering for a while whether there is a point at which loosening the tension will start to make the cube lock-up more and that until that point, it turns better without lock-ups until said point.

I also think that just loosening the cube in general makes it lock-up more often.. any ideas?

Ah yes, but the tighter the cube, the harder to turn. Finding the perfect point for the cube tension may be difficult. Play around with it, and you will find a perfect tension.

It depends on the cube, IMO. (closed vs. open edges etc.) My C II is pretty tight, hasn't popped, and cuts an entire corner pretty well, whereas my old type a is pretty tight, locks up, and pops.

I have found that if a cube is too loose it locks more. The worst case of this was on my Alpha Haiyan.

Speed, cutting, locking and popping are all effected by tension. I really takes a lot of tweaking to find a good balance of each.

I'd say cutting suffers the most when I get to a decent mix of the other three attributes. That's OK for me. I don't need insane cutting.

Use Pestvic's method

Tighten all the screws
Start with one side
Loosen it it a 1/4 turn and try to pop it (Out the UF Edge on top of the FR Edge and try to push it up)
When it doesn't pop, loosen it 1/4 more.
Keep doing that until it pops, then tighten it back.
Do it to all the sides.

Dealing with lock-ups

With my newly bought glow in the dark DIY C4U 3x3 ( http://cube4you.com/cube4you-3x3x3-diy-glow-in-dark-cube-p-108.html ), I have noticed it has a major issue with lock ups. At first I thought it was just because of my spring tension, so I followed this guide: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYB3DRf4Oh8

After that, it still has the lock-up issue. If I tighten the screws anymore it barely turns and if I loosen it anymore the cube becomes pop happy. So I was wondering, is there anyway to prevent lockups? And please don't say "buy a new cube" since I don't have that option right now.

That cube has more of a propensity to lockups in my opinion.

If you can't buy another cube, you can either try rounding the corners, or to improve your turning technique.

I have this problem with Edison cube which is supposed to be a good cube lol. If I tighten it it feels heavy and slow if I loosen it it can pop like crazy.

It may be just right if I tighten it and use lots of lubricant but I don't want to have to keep lubricating it. I seldom ever lubricate my A-III and it works fine.

Right now I am using it in it's loose and poppable state and controlling my turning to reduce popping. Stinks.

cube chamfers

does adding chamfers can help in lessening the lock ups?

i have 2 yr old dian sheng cube and it still turns nice but it has a little problem with lock ups. I'm thinking that adding chamfers in the center piece can lessen the lock ups. but I can't just add chamfers on it because I'm not sure of it and I can't undo it once I already add chamfers.

Here are my specific questions
1. will chamfers can help?
2. if yes, should it be around the center pieces?
2.a. how long? 1/4 or half or etc of the length of the center pieces?

What causes a cube to lock up?

Hi, i was just wondering what actually caused a cube to lock up.

Is it the physical shape of the pieces?
Or is is the tension of the springs being too loose?

And does anyone know any good mods to help stop this on a cube4you diy type a?

Thanks
