As Tabe said, Great Britain isn’t the same as the United Kingdom. The UK is a sovereign country (made up of other sovereign countries, yes it’s annoyingly complex) consisting of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. GB is a geographical term for the main isle in the British Isles. Right now that means that England, Scotland, and Wales are apart of the GB area.

Separate them into countries! You'd never see a US solver being listed as North American. While I understand the change from Great Britain to UK for political and trading purposes, I've disliked it for smaller transactions such as personal competitions such as speedsolving. Let the boundaries shine, the US shouldn't be the only country proud of their flag.
(btw, been watching a lot of those "Brits first time in the US" vids recently lol)

Umm I’m pretty sure other countries are proud of their flags.

There are only 2 countries in the world according to you, US and norther Ireland. There are more than these 2, I know Americans aren’t good at geography but not this much.

I’m referring to the fact that Northern Ireland has no official country flag outside of the Union Jack (as part of the UK). Remember again that the first two people to post in this thread were Americans correcting a person from Indonesia concerning the proper geographical and political states of the UK and its countries. I won’t mention the issue with saying “American.”

Sorry man your post felt semi aggressive

That's because North America is a continent and the UK is not. People call the UK and England/Scotland/Wales/Northern Ireland both countries. There's a whole section and page on Wikipedia about the terminology of sovereign country.

If you mean you think American refers to the Americas continents, that's the far less common usage. And purposely inviting confusion.

And your post is fully aggressive, trying to insult while missing what ProStar was implying completely.

Agreed, which is why I typically use it to reference citizens of the USA. But given that I was just called out for “thinking only 2 countries exist” (after making a trivia-based vexillology joke which JDAW didn’t understand), I figured I’d be specific.

Here we go again. Just because some Americans are bad at geography doesn't mean the whole country is. Just like how a shark was seen eating people in the movie JAWS, it doesn't mean that all fish from the shark family are carnivores that eat prey.

I meant no offense by my original post. I simply meant that I don't believe that countries should be grouped together under one name, regardless of their size. Maybe for specific competitions it makes sense because of how folks are joined together, such as soccer or other group sports. But for individuals competing, in my opinion, those folks should be representing their specific nation.

The countries aren’t grouped together because of their size; they’re grouped together because the United Kingdom is itself a country. One prime example of this is that the UK is a member of the UN, while the countries within the UK are not. The whole of the UK is one singular country, not a continent or a club like North America or the European Union.
