Hi everyone,
I'm an animator in my 30s and I recently picked up cubing as a hobby. I have a Rubik's brand 3x3 that I got when I was a teenager and learned how to solve with the beginner's method, but hadn't touched for over a decade. I put a speedcube on my Amazon wishlist, but nobody bought it for me (sadKeanu.jpg), so I decided to buy one for myself. I can't remember what the motivation was, maybe the Speedcubing Netflix doc. Anyway, I bought the MoYu RS3 M 2020 and a YJ MGC 2x2x2 M and have been having a lot of fun learning how to solve them and get faster.

I've learned 4LLL CFOP and Ortega for 2x2, and just recently got a sub 1 minute time for the first time ever on 3x3 (PB for 2x2 is 6.3 with a lucky scramble)! I know that's not the most impressive thing, but I don't have a tremendous amount of practice time, being a dad and working and all that.

Speaking of, my 6-year-old was interested in learning how to solve, so I drew instructions for the beginner method on a couple sheets of paper and I helped him learn that. Then I said I would buy him a speedcube like mine if he could solve the Rubik's cube on his own with no help or looking at instructions, and he memorized the algorithms in like a day. So he's well on his way as well and it's great to have a hobby we can share together.

It's nice to join an online community like this, and I look forward to learning from all of you.

Welcome to the forums, it's great your kid has an interest in cubing I like how you make him earn a speedcube of his own. It's also great that you got into cubing through something like that, I personally got into cubing after reading the GWR 2020 speedcubing section.

Thanks everyone! I just beat my pb this evening, 55.95! Short term goal is avg sub-1min, so I'm making progress bit by bit. I'm also trying to teach my 3-year-old. I think he's got the white cross figured out, but he doesn't seem quite as motivated as the 6-year-old, which is totally fair and totally fine.

I wouldn't push it on the three year old, Most people learn when they are like 10 or 11 and its impressive that the 6 year old has the diligence to learn at a young age

For sure, I'm not pushing it - I know as soon as there's pressure it stops being fun. What I meant is he's interested and likes playing with my cubes, and of course wants to keep up with his big brother, but obviously it take more effort to try and learn the basics, so the attention span is pretty low. I forgot he had a birthday recently, so he's 4, and very bright for his age.
