Well if you already can't mentally handle timing your solves at home because it makes you nervous, you shouldn't expect to do well in a competition. A very common tip from good cubers is to regularly simulate a competition at home, which involves timing your solves. You have to get used to it, it is a vital part of speedcubing.

An even better tip would be not to time my solves at all. If it's just to measure progress, I don't need to use it every time i solve the cube.
A most outstanding tip would be to change the timer update settings so that it is set to "none". That way, you still time yourself without the pressure of knowing what the time is.
