Very Big Update!
As per usual we'll start off with 3x3, fun stuff to go over.

3x3
Mo3: 11.64
Ao5: 11.96 sub 12 average is nuts for me.
Ao12: 12.78
Ao100: 14.23
Ao1000: 14.73
All records broken except single, I've gotten close to it though! Sub-9 single would be great!

2x2
Ao12: 4.83
Ao100: 5.86
Some kid asked if he could use my old MGC 2x2 and he gave me his gan, so i broke some records XD

4x4
Ao12: 1:00.24
Ao100: 1:03.73

5x5
Mo3: 1:56.04
Ao5: 1:58.13
Ao12: 2:06.15
Ao100: 2:16.04
As much as I feel I'm not improving, stats show otherwise soooo...

6x6
Single: 3:44.26
Mo3: 4:07.74
Ao5: 4:20.45
Ao12: 4:38.93
All records broken!

7x7
Single: 6:10.47
Mo3: 6:37.00
Ao5: 6:47.65
Ao12: 7:19.95
All records broken (again)!

Clock
here are the fun bits...
Single: 5.44
Mo3: 6.88
Ao5: 7.10
Ao12: 7.64
Ao100: 8.12
Ao1000: 8.70
All records broken for my #1 event, but I'll talk about this more later

One-Handed:
Single: 33.03
Mo3: 36.65
Ao5: 38.61
Ao12: 40.71
wack event, it cramps my hand and i cant even to g-perms. I only practiced this for the competition, ended up skipping the event to warm-up for clock.

Final Notes:
So I went to a competition and I sorta just... underperformed. I missed PR in all my events except 2x2, which if I can let you know only one thing about my opinions on anything cube-related, I hate 2x2. I only competed because I gave mine to a kid so I used his for fun (broke almost all my PBs). And I just thought that since im accidentally warmed up for 2x2, might as well compete. Easiest scrambles ever. 3.5 single and 5.3 average PR. Wackiest stuff
3x3 I just forgot how timers work and I was still half asleep so I got a 15.4 average. Not great, not terrible, unlikely I would've made round 2 if I PR'ed anyway.

Clock was annoying. Made finals with a 9.3, not great, I had a DNF and a 10 second solve so I wasn't expecting much. But during the time between round one and finals, I broke several PRs and I would've been in top 3 for round 1 if I averaged what I did in warm-ups. Finals rolls around and I just cannot recreate what I just did 5 f----g minutes ago. Missed single PR and average PR by less than .2 seconds each. And I missed podium. That was great. After this incident, I needed to change something up

THE PLAN
  • Get myself a pin order - I've had different pin orders in the past, but I would never stick with it and kinda steer off into my own thing by the time I flip.
  • Lube up my clock - I scrambled the first heat of clock, and I got to see how different people set up their clocks and see how their times correlate. And my clock is pretty smooth with well over 2000 solves on it, but anyone who has competed in clock as a main event can tell a good clock, and a good clock. I needed to turn my good clock, into a good clock. Gotta do some research with that.
  • Begin to memorize the second side - This will allow for me to prepare for corners, I think that can chop a good .5-1 off my times if I get good.
  • Do 1000 solves from now (currently at 3104 on my session) til September 1st.
This was probably my biggest post yet, so thank you to anyone who took the time to read all this, I'd love to talk about any of this with anyone. Have a great day <3

I've seen a great degree of variation between the clocks of top solvers. I've tried multiple clocks of people in the top 20 WR, and they honestly all feel different. It's completely up to preference. Some people like faster clocks, while others prefer slower ones. Some like clicky clocks, while others prefer as little click as possible. It's more about finding what works for you rather than trying to make yours feel like someone else's. For example, I did the tape and magnet mods for awhile because everyone else was doing it. However, I've discovered that I greatly prefer slower, more controllable clocks with the screws in. I find that I don't DNF as much, and I just got my 4.50 PR single (and 5.75 PR average) with this setup. This preference is specific to me, and may be entirely different for you.

On the flip side, I like my clock pretty fast and have found that it really helps with the flow of my solves. I also don't DNF much and have achieved pretty decent results with this (3.91 PR single)
It all really just comes down to preference, but most people just use the tape mod and add Weight 5 to the shell.

A lot of people have been switching back to screws, but tape mod is still very popular for sure. One plus to using screws in my opinion is the ability to tension it, but again, it's all up to preference. I've noticed that less clicky clocks with tape and magnet mods very frequently result in an ALL+/- 1 DNF, as there is less control with decreased effort to make turns. This all isn't to argue with you in any way though, since it's still completely up to preference and turning style. I'm just presenting some more possible factors, though I would recommend that OP try both options to determine what suits them best. I know you and I have very similar official averages, and I know people who are faster than us use both ways; so truly either way could be optimal for OP.

Also, what was the scram for your 3.91? I want to try it (you can DM me)

MEDIUM UPDATE!
So I set up my clock and... broke all my clock records? and 3x3???

3x3
Single: 8.60
No skips or anything, I was able to read 2 pairs from inspection and had a fat sune OLL and Y-perm. My previous PRs have been dropping by about .05 each, and now I drop this by .40. I gotta get a crazy scramble to beat this.
Mo3: 11.62
Ao5: 11.92 Two sub 10s in an average.
Ao12: 12.78
Ao100: 14.23
Ao1000: 14.69
All records broken AGAIN!

4x4
Missed single by .02, my 48.59 in competition still stands for now...
Mo3: 52.85
Ao5: 53.61
Ao12: 58.16
Ao100: 1:02.57
Fast approaching 1000 solves on my session!

5x5
Single: 1:49.78
Centers were so fast! My edge paring are easily my worst enemy

6x6
Ao12: 4:37.66

Clock
Single: 5.32 Plenty of corner skips!
Mo3: 6.07
Ao5: 6.29
Ao12: 6.95
Ao1000: 7.98
All records broken, I got a sub 7 average of 5, then average of 12, then sub 8 global. Clock is an interesting event. All it took is for me to set up my clock and I break my records by over a second.

THE PLAN
I did all 1000 solves! I am now at 4109 solves, completing by goal of hitting 1000 solves by September. Don't know whether that is good or sad. Lots of practice though!
Still working on pin order now that I set up my clock.
Unsure where to go from now aside from starting to learn JK corners or 7simul

Final Notes
Lemme go through some comments on my last post.
How fast are you now?
Comfortably improving at a good rate
I would recommend that OP try both options to determine what suits them best. I know you and I have very similar official averages, and I know people who are faster than us use both ways; so truly either way could be optimal for OP.
Is a tape mod literally just putting tape on the sides of it? And would tensioning be adjusting the screws on the side?

Almost forgot, how do I not hate megaminx?
Thanks to whoever reads all of this <3

JK corners is pretty cool but not as ergonomic. You could switch to 7simul if you want but you can still get way faster with flip.

yes

Is there anything more I should do aside from grinding more solves?
Based on your speed I’m guessing you can already flip in any direction. If you can’t, make sure you can flip in any direction to maximize skips and TPS.
You could also watch some example solves. Conan Mo (Funny Monke) and Carter Thomas have some videos on improving on clock but they are quite advanced so you might not want to try to do all of those things right away.
The big thing is just grinding solves to improve TPS and recognition.

Small Update!!
I think I can now call myself advanced-level at clock.

3x3
Mo3: 11.20 some good stuff right there
Ao5: 11.66 a PR ao5 starts with a pr mo3
Ao12: 12.76 by .02s
Ao100: 13.97 a good solve session.
Ao1000: 14.34

4x4
Mo3: 52.55
Ao100: 1:01.25

5x5
Ao100: 2.15.86

Clock
Single: 4.95 yessir. it will be a while before I crack a sub-4 single.
Ao5: 6.22
Ao12: 6.56
Ao100: 7.39
Ao1000: 7.64

Final Update:
Soccer season started so haven't done many solves, been focusing on that, and when I can, I always do either clock or 3x3, occasionally mixing in other events. Oh well! Thanks to whoever reads all of this <3

I'm back, working on color neutral. Created 2 new sessions, one for R/O crosses and one for B/G crosses, 10 solves a day until I'm color neutral. I got a scramble that had terrible crosses for yellow and white 5 times in a row so I just decided to bite the bullet and start working on all of it. I'm a lot better at green/blue cross than red/orange. Don't really know why.

Soccer season is over (went very bad) And now hockey season has now started, going very well so far.
I joined a new soccer club so that I get some extra practice in. Got some new records to go over so I'll get into that.

3x3
Mo3: 11.02
Ao5: 11.39
Ao12: 12.29
Ao100: 13.53
Ao1000: 14.09
Sub-14 is within reach! Honestly, I may need some solves critiqued. Also, is it common to have such a wide range of times?
1705437554204.png
Labels are along the axes yes thats the plural form , I have times from 16-19 and times that are 10-12.
I also got an 8.96, second ever sub-9, .36 of PB. Started to use Yoo Cube Deluxe and I tend to use both cubes, leaning more towards the deluxe. Currently at 22 sub-10 singles. I dropped learning color neutral, ignore everything I said in that post above. Probably going to learn fingertricks for each OLL and PLL I have, I hate being on a sub-10 pace only to lose it to a G-Perm. I've pretty much only been practicing 3x3 so not much to report on other events.

Thanks to whoever reads all of this <3

(edit: if you are able to do cube critiques DM, should have some experience doing so, and sub-10 PR, can pay.)
