Asbjørn's Progression Thread - Grinding 3x3 / Goals: Sub-10 ao5, Learn COLL, ZB *updated Sept 11th, 2024

There have been plenty of hiatuses between beginning learning and now, but I got the cubing bug again and have accomplished lots in the last few weeks. Since starting back up again, I went from 21 OLLs to 46. All that's left is Fish shapes, and 7/8 Dot cases.

For PLL, I refreshed my memory on N perms, and finally took the plunge and learned G perms, literally 10 years after I learned about CFOP compared to beginner's method. It took me two days to memorize all four. They're much simpler than I had anticipated, and the fingertricks I've learned from them is outstanding.

F2L has been interesting lately. I only ever learned it intuitively, and only recently have stumbled across and alg set from J Perm's YouTube channel. Once last layer is complete, that is where I'm headed.

I think the only reason I was able to memorize so much so effectively compared to before is because of bestsiteever.ru. The OLL and PLL trainers have been phenomenal with forcing recognition and keeping everything fresh in the mind. Plus, for me it gamifies the learning process, which is crucial in keeping me interested for long enough lol.

I haven't exactly gotten to the point where I'm recalling the algs fast enough for them to be faster, compared to 4-look LL, but I'm sticking with it. Just a matter of breaking bad habits. Really hoping for that sub-10 single and sub-15 ao5. Hoping it's coming soon, but we'll see what happens.

Last layer is complete!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had eight algorithms left to learn, which were the rest of the Dot cases (I already knew OLL 1 and 2), and the Y shaped ones which are actually fish shaped (9 and 10). What amazes me is I was able to memorize all eight of these algs in one day, which is extraordinary for me. I did a complete refresher of all algs with bestsiteever.ru to make sure they were not lost upon me, and I only messed up on OLL 14. It was reminding me of a fingertrick I used on #17, an F move with my left thumb, and I got them mixed up. After my absolute befuddlement from forgetting that alg which I learned years and years ago, I took some extra time to practice it, and I can safely say that I can recall every last layer alg in CFOP with zero hesitation. Congrats to me!!

Also, I achieved sub15 ao5 and sub10 single a long time ago. However, just recently I was able to beat my single PB. 9.84 -> 9.38 (-0.46). My new ao5 PB is 14.18.

It seems that I get into these great big GIANT bursts of cubing energy, and then I lose interest for a while. In just one day alone, I was able to complete 533 solves, which was the most solves in one day that I had done since November. I was cubing here and there in between, but not nearly as much as yesterday. I'm hoping to continue this pattern, and maybe even move on to ZBLL, if I'm so quick to absorb algs like that. Seriously, that never happens, learning 8 algs in the span of two hours.

There's this method that I've sorta been using in order to tell how pieces are being translated and permutated around the last layer. I like to take an OLL, imagine it's done already, and try to see which direction each of the pieces end up moving in. If, for example, you have a Dot case like OLL 1, and look at what PLL is there if you pretended to twist the corners in place, and also flip the edges, that's where I like to pay a little extra attention and just see where those pieces are going. In the case of OLL 1, if you just reverse the alg, it obviously gives you OLL 1, but it's almost as if you could do a Z perm, U', Ab perm, and U. I like to imagine that all of this is being done all at once, while the OLL is being executed. It helps me think a little bit more deliberately about where all the pieces are going. It's a hard topic for me to visualize, so anything to help me with this is a welcome addition to the technique. Hopefully what I just described isn't just me reinventing the wheel.

Become an all rounder and you will probably find an event you can do without burning out.

August '24 update after about 4 months:

No new records quite yet, but I have made significant strides in a new PLL prediction method I've been developing over the last few months. In the last paragraph of my previous update, you'll see I was talking about noticing a PLL happening "beneath" an OLL, or rather, an orientation alg having permuting properties. The PLL that happens while the OLL is being executed is something I'm calling the OLL-ID or the OLL's "identity PLL." This has most likely been known for a long time, but it was a new discovery that I had made for myself. I've also come up with an imaginary LL step to account for called PNOLL (permutation, no orientation). This was how I deduced the OLLID in each of the 57 algs, by inverting or setting up each OLL, pretending that orientation was complete and skipping that step to try and solve PLL. The last thing that I made was the PLL addition sheet, which is a spreadsheet I made that equates a sequence of moves to another simpler sequence following the pattern: [PLL1 + U-move + PLL2] = [some U-move + PLL3 + some U-move], accounting for the possibility that any of the U-moves in question could be U0. 21 PLLs squared times 4 possible U moves makes 1,764 evaluations on this table. Since both OLLID and PNOLL are inherently PLLs, that means they can be used to algebraically come up with a PLL solution while taking only one look at the OLL step. All of this info that I have curated comes together somewhat nicely in a paper I've been writing, and I hope to post it all to the Puzzle Theory forum when I'm ready to do so. Wish me luck that I can make it make sense, and hopefully it goes somewhere. If it doesn't, oh well. There's my progress for the last few months, and see you in the next one.
 
Cool man, I’m trying for a sub 20 average and a sub 13 pb. I’m currently a student and don’t have enough time to memorize all those oll cases. I just use sun and cross cases. Good luck!

wow it's been a year already!! nice job! I responded to you when you first made this thread and I accomplished some of my goals too (I average sub 15) but wow you got that sub 10 single! impressive!! i still haven't done that. awesome progress.

Interesting. Do you know how to recognize PLLs from just two side of the cube if the prediction fails?
not quite yet lol, still mixing up A and V perms if i'm being quite honest. but i'm just havin fun at this point. all the categorizing is kinda forcing me to get better at recognition thru brute force tho.

Good job on completing last layer, what is your upcoming roadmap?
 
I think that 2 sided recognition is more important than prediction, since you should be able to recognize something very fast before attempting to predict it.
yeah you're probably right. after working on my method for so long, i suppose it's only really good for practicing and drilling without a timer, but at least it has its uses as of right now.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who just didn't bother to learn the rest of the PLLs
I made flash cards to learn the R and N perms and they really help
 
Idk if I ever mentioned this when it happened at the time, but I did in fact achieve sub-15 ao5, quite a while ago actually lol. My ao5 record is 14.18**. On to sub-10 one day.

I bought a tornado v3 Pioneer and it turns like butter. noticeably better results than usual compared to my GAN12 Maglev, which catches on itself all the time. 500 solves in the books. Also 2 sided PLL is coming along nicely. I think I'm about halfway done memorizing.

Nice work on the 2 sided PLL recognition! It's something I have been putting off for awhile 😅
 
I bought a tornado v3 Pioneer and it turns like butter. noticeably better results than usual compared to my GAN12 Maglev, which catches on itself all the time. 500 solves in the books. Also 2 sided PLL is coming along nicely. I think I'm about halfway done memorizing.
You got a TV3, and the TV4 is coming soon 💀
