To mimic the color patterns of a virtual 15puzzle. Helps with recognition of the different tiles for each step. A lot of ppl do it to their puzzles, including WB1 Dawid Wojcik. Look at this video of his for example
I did it to mine using cut up pieces of random sticker sets i had lying around
