Hey folks,

I first solved the cube the year it was released in the UK, using what came to be known as a three layer solve. I've had numerous Rubik's puzzles over the years and I'm now getting back into it and trying to learn to solve at speed. My fastest solve is 57 seconds - actually done this afternoon using my new RS3M that arrived from the rainforest today.

Currently learning F2L, my personal goal is to get down to 30 seconds in the next year.

You can definitely do it. I am a shade younger than you and have a PB of 12.66. With practice and study, you can certainly reach your goals.

Welcome to a fellow first-solved-in-the-early-80s cuber!

You are way ahead of me and should be fantastic as you continue. I'm 75 years young and only just started barely 3 months ago.

Hey Jamie, I see you wanna become a speedcubet so I’ll give a very good introduction that can get you down to 30 seconds in about a month.

So the first thing you wanna learn is F2L, make sure you don’t learn beginner f2l because it can teach you a lot of bad habits which I am still carrying these bad habits so my suggestion is to go straight for advanced f2l and make sure to learn all of the algs. Well not all of them but enough to where you can solve all of the cases you regularly see.

Secondly, let’s talk about OLL, to me I think 2 look OLL is good and is essential if you wanna be sub 20-15 but if you wanna be sub 10 then you need to know full OLL. So 2 look is very easy my only suggestions is to learn very good finger tricks for this because you can need to get the best times for each alg.

Thirdly, you should learn PLL which is the last step in using the CFOP method, for a beginner just learn 2 look so you can get a good idea of how to do PLL and how to recognize cases. One of my best tips I can give for PLL is any case can be done if it isn’t aligned to match the colors as long as you are doing it from the correct angle, when I was getting started I thought the colors had to be aligned correctly to do the algorithm. But do not use a 2 look PLL for too long because it will slow you down overtime and full PLL only has 21 Algs in total so you should learn that.

I hope this is the advice your looking for I hope the best for you in the future and don’t let no one discourage you in you’re journey.
