Quite often I stumble onto a post that is really helpful, or clarifies a tough subject. Instead of taking up space as a a one-word "thanks" post, I think, like many other forums around the internet, a small thanks button will enable users to gratify good members. Contributing members would be able to see how many people they actually help with their review, answer to a question, or technique/strategy. Maybe Speedsolving.com should implement this?

I don't think it is necessary. It is implied that you express gratitude toward the people who have answered your question.

The people you probably see doing this are people like Womack whom we ignore most of his posts.

And maybe have this thing to see which member is most helpful? Like a rating on the quality of information given by a certain person.

Sounds like a good idea, but im not a mod.

just like a like button at facebook you mean?
In Facebook there is a "Like" button, which isn't always the same thing.

Gratitude is implied, but its also nice to know that you may have helped out many other people as well, and it would allow for the poster to be recognized for that.

That just turns into someone that hates you using there daily point just to make you a little bit worse in the eyes of forum. And someone who is **** riding someone will everyday use that point to make someone else way better then they should be.

Obvious solution: upvotes only

On another forum I use, there is a button and it just says "Do you find this post helpful?" Something like that sure couldn't do any harm. I don't think people would always click that, just because the like the other person.

Edit: might be a good way to find posts that should be the most useful.

It would probably making it easier for persons to lurk threads for information if you could filter posts by how many upvotes it has, posts with good information would gradually be more visible among the clutter in the thread when you raise the cap for how many upvote it needs for not getting filtered.

As an (extreme?) example: If you have a thread that got about say 40 pages (Not that much if you have the default post per page setting, but meh), but the thread contains loads of off-topic and/or spam, then by filtering the posts so that only posts with 3 or more upvotes are visible, then suddently there's only 3-4 pages to sift through.

This is however based on the fact that people who see that the post is good material that is relevant to the thread upvotes it, which we cannot be sure they will...

Maybe only the mods can see who upvotes who. That way, if someone keeps 'liking' a particular person's posts, then the mods could disable the 'like' function for that particular person.

One way to measure this could be 'upvotes per post' (basically the total upvotes across all posts for one user divided by the total number of posts for one user). Only problem would be the Forum Competition posts - for people like Mats, Mike Hughey, Odder or others that run/do competitions - people wouldn't tend to like them posts, so that could lower the 'upvotes per post' number. That's my only worry, but a great idea. We would just need to work out any possible flaws.

There's a similar function in UPSB; when a member posts something extremely useful/hilarious/subtle trolling other members get to like his post. The option to vote negative was banned due to the abuse it garnered.
