So it's not worth the effort to become color neutral, is it worth the effort to become non - color neutral? Right now I'm just starting with whichever side I happen to see the most edges first in inspection, then whichever f2l pairs are most obvious. Then Balint method (I think: groups of 3) and finish with eo, ep, cp, co.
I think because inspection is limited, I don't have the time to fully check the building difficulty of every star. I think that despite this, building a star is still easy most of the time. I am able to even track my plan my first pair, perhaps 10%(?) of the time. I'm not really sure about this figure.

Nothing beyond F2L colour is fixed for me either. I like to have the choice of which side to solve next. Usually this is a side that is adjacent to last pair of the current side. Even on the last 2 sides, I choose to build the one which "looks" better.

I have done enough solves on each different colour that I have a very good idea of what pieces I need to track for F2L, regardless of the star colour.

I just dusted off an old megaminx from my drawer and am trying to get good at it. Does anyone know what kind of megaminx I have? I also have an old Mefferts and Dayan minx but this one is best. I just down know the brand and if it's still considered any good. PB is about 2:39 after three days of practice.

Looks like an old shengshou.
It's still considered a good minx, but the new ss aurora is much better, as it comes pre-florian modded, a must for that cube.
I think I got to about 2-ish with a ss before I got a sculpted galaxy.

Does anyone know what the move count is for a standard megaminx solve?
I counted the moves of a few solves a couple weeks ago and they were all about ~195. I don't think there were any over 200. Best was like 185.
Westlund/Balint, order neutral/fixed order?
If there aren't any stats on this, can some of you just count the moves as you would in a regular speedsolve, not trying to be extra efficient?

I need to learn megaminx and I like the paper pdf things but no links from here are working. I'd appreciate ones that are like legoboyz3's tutorial, as that is what i use, but i do not always have internet access so I wanted a paper copy

I do not know if this is what you are looking for but here is a link that shows you how to solve a megaminx the beginner way, and you can also print it out https://ruwix.com/twisty-puzzles/megaminx-gigaminx-teraminx-petaminx/
If you are looking for 4lll on megaminx this page is great and you can print it out as well :http://www.kungfoomanchu.com/guides/odder-megaminx.pdf
Hope that this helps

How common are misscrambles? (Actually two questions in one: (i) How common are misscrambles in competitions? (ii) How often do you misscramble?)

For context: I just did thirty scrambles (and solves) and only one of them was a misscramble. Megaminx and 555 take about the same time for scrambling and solving, and it'd be weird that 555 requires misscrambles to be fixed and mega doesn't if misscrambles happen at similar rates.

I'm more likely to make mistakes scrambling megaminx than 5x5x5, but that may be just because I'm not very good at solving megaminx either.

I would think it's harder to check megaminx for a valid scramble against a picture than it is to check 5x5x5 (due to more common color variations on megaminx vs. 5x5x5, plus 12 colors vs. 6) - to me that is the better justification for allowing megaminx misscrambles.

so I was solving a megaminx, when I discovered I could solve it but two corners were switched. is that solvable?

do pros still agree on color neutrality having worse potencial or having an unreachable potencial?
quote me on the reply please
thanks.

552.

Permutations from this other thread about megaminx. I don't remember whether I used left-action or right-action convention, but R-- D++ and D++ R-- have the same order anyway so it doesn't matter.
Code:
R :=
(1, 12, 32, 53, 29)
(2, 13, 33, 54, 30)
(3, 14, 34, 55, 26)
(16, 40, 60, 47, 22)
(17, 36, 56, 48, 23)
(18, 37, 57, 49, 24)
(19, 38, 58, 50, 25)
(20, 39, 59, 46, 21)
(41, 45, 44, 43, 42)
(61, 71, 92, 113, 88)
(62, 72, 93, 114, 89)
(63, 73, 94, 115, 90)
(64, 74, 95, 111, 86)
(78, 98, 118, 110, 84)
(79, 99, 119, 106, 85)
(80, 100, 120, 107, 81)
(76, 96, 116, 108, 82)
(77, 97, 117, 109, 83)
(101, 105, 104, 103, 102)
(121, 123, 127, 131, 126)
(124, 128, 132, 130, 125)
;

D :=
(28, 23, 18, 13, 8)
(29, 24, 19, 14, 9)
(30, 25, 20, 15, 10)
(51, 46, 41, 36, 31)
(52, 47, 42, 37, 32)
(53, 48, 43, 38, 33)
(54, 49, 44, 39, 34)
(55, 50, 45, 40, 35)
(60, 59, 58, 57, 56)
(87, 82, 77, 72, 67)
(88, 83, 78, 73, 68)
(89, 84, 79, 74, 69)
(90, 85, 80, 75, 70)
(111, 106, 101, 96, 91)
(112, 107, 102, 97, 92)
(113, 108, 103, 98, 93)
(114, 109, 104, 99, 94)
(115, 110, 105, 100, 95)
(120, 119, 118, 117, 116)
(126, 125, 124, 123, 122)
(131, 130, 129, 128, 127)
;

Order(R^-2 * D^2); # prints 552

(Verify in Twizzle with (Ew2' Dw2)552.)

Another way to figure this out is figure out how many times it is to bring the corners back to solved (24), and how many times it takes the edges to be solved (23 I think?), and find the least common multiple of the two. This works on any puzzle, but you might have to account for different piece types like centers or center orientation. Then you'd be finding the LCM of 3+ piece types.
