Thread: Original 3x3x3 ?

  1. #1

    Default Original 3x3x3 ?

I have got my hands on a very old 3x3 cube, and was wondering how I can tell if this is one of the original Rubik's/Magic Cubes..?

Is there anything I can look for to determine if it is the original?

If the centers are flat, rather than curved, it is one of the originals.

What? If I'm not mistaken all cube center pieces are flat. Do you mean that the original cube's center pieces have sharp corners?

I believe he means the inside, where the edge pieces slide.

i have a flat-center cube that i know is not original(it says rubiks.com on it). it might predate 25th anniv cubes but it is certainly not original(i assume by original we mean 80's). my friend got it a number of years back and gave it to me a few months ago. it was the cube i learned to solve on (it was still technically his then) and i am very glad i managed to get a hold of it. it also has the old rubik's logo on it.

the cubies are not great but the core is quite good. i put my type A cubies on it and got some new personal bests for some PLLs

I have a Magic from 1979-1980 that has curved centers, colour scheme Green and Blue are reversed from the standard rubiks colours.

Cubes up to 2004 had flat centers. I also have a 1980's era cube with arched centers.
