Scrambling a 3x3 by 7 moves and solve it back with 7 moves

I was trying to scrambled the 3x3 by 7 moves, and see if I could solve it back with 7 moves.
I started the timer and observed the cube, then solved it. The total time was observation time plus solving time, kind like BLD.
You can undo your moves, but you should make sure that you do not mess up.;)

1. 44.89 L R D R D' U L (Oh, I successed)
2. DNF L' D' L2 R B' U' R (This was freaking hard, and I gave it up while a minute gone by)
3. DNF D U2 F2 D2 B' F2 L' (I solved it in 14.62 seconds, but I did L B U2 D2 B2 D2 B2 D, which was 8 moves)
4. DNF D' F2 R' B2 L' R2 B' (Hahaha, I turned 34 moves in 42.84 seconds)
5. DNF B F2 D' U B L' U2 (38.00 seconds, I tried U2 B' D U' L F L' B' then gave up)
6. 1:01.19 B R' U2 L U' B2 F (I did B2 F' U2 L' U R at first, then R' U' L U' L' U2 R B', I thought it was wrong but it was the answer)
7. DNF B2 F' R' D' B2 F' D2 (Did something like D2 B2 D R R' F R B2 R' F' D' F D R F, wrong way...)
8. 45.98 L R2 D U' L2 U R2 (R2 D' U' D L2 U D' L' R2, I thought it was 9 moves, but it was correct)
9. DNF F' D2 U' B' U2 R' B' (I did B, then I messed up)
10. 38.25 B' U' L F' D' L F(F' D' F' wasn't going well,so I tried another way and solved it, but I forgot how @@)
11. DNF L R' U' B R B' L' (the green and white edge looked easy though)
12. DNF D' U2 R B2 L R D(Did D' R2 U2 L U2 L2 U2 L2 D then gave up)

This was pretty fun to play, maybe I'll practice the accuracy.

I tried the second one: L' D' L2 R B' U' R. I agree this is hard. The first move you make doesn't seem to achieve anything apart from adding a corner to a corner-edge pair to make a corner-edge-corner triplet. I wouldn't have guessed that this is the first move since it would mean that one the pairs of corner and edge (that can be made by doing U' first) would be one more move away from each other.

I tried your number 2 (the freaking hard one). The U B is immediately obvious to make the orange block. A second later I found the way to align the red-green and red-blue edge so I already had R' U B and the other 4 moves were immediately obvious. This was one of the easiest for me
This scramble would have been harder if the L2 R would have been L2 <F> or L2 <D> (adjacent instead of opposite)

The only one that gave me trouble was nr. 10. I started correctly with F', but then did L and D in the wrong order (D L', F L' U B). Of course that was easy to correct with the double layer Anti-Sune B' U2 F U F' U B so my entire solution became F' D L' F L' U' F U F' U B (11)

Here is an interesting challenge: F2 L' U' L F2 R' D
If you continue like R' D' R2 it is an optimal J-Perm so you might be able to find the 7 moves by doing the wrong 3 and then undoing them again to leave the 7. But I wouldn't be able to find just the 7.
(It is actually a strange optimal Y-Perm that I know where I moved the last F2 to the front: L' U' L F2 R' D R U R2 D' R2 U' F2. This is as close as I can make a Y-perm and J-perm be the same)

If you scrambled the cube, won't you subconsciously know how to undo those moves?

I think this challenge needs 2 people to be effective (scrambler and solver)

EDIT: is the goal to be able to undo the 7 moves or just to solve with the fewest moves possible?

My thoughts exactly. It is a very fun way to play with non-cubers :)

I think I once solved a 7 moves scramble in s6 (is this even possible), but my friend may have counted wrong.

  • Scramble A.
  • Scramble B, solve A.
  • Scramble C, solve B.
  • Scramble D, solve C

If you've got more cubes, make an even larger buffer. Two cubes worked well enough for me, though.

I agree with above posters, it is a great way to teach some fundamentals to non cubers. Especially when they turn opposite sides, so you can do slice moves to make it seem like less moves, and they think it's magic.
