Default A suggestion for the front page

As of writing there are 6/21 threads on the front page (usually more) that contain basically no new content for those not already interested or involved in the thread. By that I mean the 'Race to x' threads, or 'the x thread' where x = 'lubrication' or 'awkward case' etc etc.

I was thinking that certain sub-forums should be changed so that new posts aren't shown on the front page, such as forum competitions etc, or alternatively, a User CP function should be created so that sub-forums displayed on the front page can be customised.

It seems a waste of space for those interested in 'new' or 'creative' content.

I don't mean to slate the threads themselves - simply that the nature of the content is better kept within their respective sub-forum(s), rather than displayed for all to see on the front page.

I understand that this is yet another task for admins, but it would be nice for it to be implemented at some point, if others want it too.
    I like cats.

i agree i remember suggesting a while back that if someone could impliment a thing similar to what youtube used to have where in the top right beside video(thread in our case) there would be an "x" button so it wouldnt show up on the home screen. I agree with Rowan though because I have no interest in certain threads that more often than not appear on the home page.

Very good idea! It's not as if something would be lost by taking forum competitions off the homepage.

New cubers might not find and participate in the competition area.

    This "issue" doesn't bother me.

This is why it should be implemented in the User CP, so they at least know it's there before they don't see it anymore.

Point! Speedsolving is due for a revelation of this kind.

Personally I feel that there should be a section dedicated to "competitions" and that it should be highlighted in a way that invites new users. This would get rid of quite a bit of unnecessary traffic on the homepage. (any mistakes may or may not be due to the 10 pints of fosters i've had. feel free to remove this part of my post)

Yes, there have been threads I have wanted to turn off on the home page as well (I remember a particular forum game awhile back). But while on the topic of the home page, I thought I would point out how I think the home page has become much less useful than it ought to be.

It seems that on most other internet forums, you can get a fairly good idea of what topics are actively being discussed from the home page. On this forum, the home page shows you what threads have been posted in, but many of these threads are "superthreads" whose title gives you little or no clue about the actual topics of the newest posts within them. This forum's home page, unlike many other forums, also does not show any partial text ("preview" text) from the most recent post. The combination of "useless" thread titles and no preview text tend to make for a home page that does little to help a user decide what's of interest and what to ignore. I think this has become somewhat of a big problem with this forum.
