Hey guys, this is my first post on the forums, and before I start, i'd like to introduce myself a little. Im a huge yoyo fan, and i'd say im better at that than cubing. I average on 3x3 at 38.57 seconds, and im 14. I think thats about it.
Now, today i was bored with my guhong, and i wanted to see what kinds of things would work good as lube. I tried some graphite powder i found in the garage, and it was too messy, so i cleaned it out. I tried some other things such as oil, grease, and some others, then i came across an idea. When you use silicon spray, you are putting a thin layer of sinicone on the pieces, so i decided to do an experiment. I took some flowable silicone from my yoyo equiptment, and put a couple drops inside the cube. My idea is that flowable silicon cured in a few hours, and before it does, ill try to work the silicon around to make it into a thin layer around the surfaces of the cube. Then it would dry, and would turn smoothly. I did just that, but when it dried the cube was stiff, and silicone residue was flaking out like crazy. I opened up the cube and noticed he problem. There was these little flakes of the silicone EVERYWHERE. I wiped them off with a cloth, then noticed there was far too much silicone in the cube to begin with. I scraped and wiped it all out, and repeated thenprocess, but with only about half a drop of the silicone. Now the cube literally turns faster and smoother than any cube ive ever used. When the silicone first went in it turned fast, but not smooth, but now its perfect.
Have any of you ever done this? Whats the weirdest thing youve used as lube, and how did it turn out? Im interested see if anybody else has tried flowable silicone.
Sounds just like differential oil/ Lubix, which is a thick silicone oil. It's one of the most popular lubes at the moment. (and as you found, it's recommended in tiny quantities)
Also welcome to the forums![]()
Ahaha I used to do a bit a yoyo-ing. However, I never knew there were such things as lubricants for them :/ I had a Duncan Butterfly or something like that which was pretty good, did tricks and whatnot.
Have you tried using Lubix (or any sort of differential silicone oil) on a cube? There should be some similarities between the flowable silicone you're using and that.
I also yo-yo and have considered this but was too afraid to try it. It sounds like a good idea and I may give it a shot. Thank you for the idea and welcome to the community.
Well flowable silicone is used in yoyoing as a response system more than a lube. And by the way, I have used Vaseline, motor oil, silicone spray, and a couple other things as lube before, but most of them make the cube feel sticky. The flowable silicone is amazing, but after experimenting on a few more cubes, I realized that the best way to use it is to apply about a drop into the cube after taking out the first edge. Then you scramble it a few times and mix around the silicone n the cube before it dries. Then once it's still wet, you disassemble the cube completely and let it dry, while there is a thin layer of the silicone on each piece. Once dried, you reassemble it, scramble it a couple times, then here comes the problem. There is silicone residue on the core, and the inside of the cube, which makes it feel terribly sluggish, and not turn smoothly. You must disassemble it(again!) and wipe away all the little white flakes. Then just reassemble the cube and it turns like a goddess. The only flaw in this is it is sort of time consuming, and would be completely mpractical on say my shengshou 6x6. But anyways, if you happen to have some flowable silicon laying around, go for it!
So Lubix creates those "flakes"? I doubt it.
And I haven't seen silicone oils advertised as windshield and glass sealer. You?

Yeah, there's this other form of silicone that is used for plumbing/sealing things up. It starts as a liquid, then turns into a little bit of a gel thing. It's flexible and gummy. But in a thin layer, I can imagine how it might be good.
The OP is definitely talking about the stuff Stefan put links to
You guys want to know the exact stuff im using, som1 linked to it. Its from yoyoexpert where i ordered it. Its fairly popular among yoyoers, and it doe strt out as a liquid, and turns to a gel. Its nothing likee lubiks though. Its a weird feeling cube when its lubed with it, but i think its amazing. The only problem is what i stated before, you have to clean out all the flakes before it turns good. Anywayz, im down to a new pb of 28.78 single 3x3, and average of 37.32
