    Default CF2L

    Complete First 2 Layers

Now you're thinking, "Oh gosh, another noob with a horrible idea...". Well, CF2L actually isn't a main method for the first 2 layers, it's a very versatile way of getting the first 2 layers; it's very unique.

I've tinkered with it for a little while now, and I like it(in certain situations). Ok, let's use this scramble, and I'll walk you through a CF2L-type-of-deal-solve-thinggymerbobber.

    Scramble: D2 R2 L B' D L2 F L' D2 L F2 L2 B U' B' U2 R' F L' F' D B' R D2 U
White on top, Green in front

So for the cross, we have the RG edge already placed(front face), easy OG edge to place, then the GW and GY edges. Well, you might think, why should I use this cross? There's 2 incorrectly oriented edges, so I'll just find another.

Good example of when you can use CF2L:

    x' L' U2 F' y R U' R' y U' R' L F L'

Made a 2x2x2 block with a cross edge placed, and a cross edge that'll take 2 moves to place.

So if we do a U R U' R', we have a CE pair ready to be placed.

    Let's place it with y' U L' U' L

We got lucky and made the YOG-YO CE pair there, but you'll notice there's another CE pair that's ready to place. GOW-OW.

    L U' L' U L U' L'

    Let's place that already made pair(y U R U' R'), M U2 M'(33 moves total), and there's the first 2 layers using CF2L. Here's another example.

    Scramble: F2 R' B' R L2 F2 R2 L2 B' U2 D F' R U R' D' R' U2 F' L' F' R' U' L2 D
White on top, Green in front

First thing that I see is a 6 move 2x2x2 block. So, let's go ahead and place it.

    U F2 R x' y R U2 R'

The WG edge can be placed in one turn, if we do that, there's a CE pair that can be made in 3 moves(excluding the first turn to place the WG edge).

    L2 y' L U L'

I see the WGO-WO CE pair waiting to be placed, so let's do that.

    U L' U L2 F' L' F

The RGW-WR pair looks mighty easy, so place that.

    R U R' U' R U R'

    Last edge(OG)

    y' M' U2 M(27 moves)

One more, just so you can understand(if you haven't already)

    Scramble: F' L R2 F' L F U2 R' B' L R2 D' R' B' F2 L2 F' D2 L B D2 F' L F2 U
White on top, Green in Front

Very easy 2x2x2 block for the start, so let's take that.

    y' D2 L2 R' U2 L'

    Now I see the GRY-GR in the front-left, YOG-OG in the up-back, and the YBO-BO in the right-down. Let's take the YOG-OG.

    R U2 R' y L' U2 L2

Now, very visible, I see the GRY-RG in the up layer, which looks like the easiest thing to do. So, why not do it?

    y' R' U' R

Now I notice there's 2 edges needed to be placed on the D layer, and an edge needed to complete the last F2L slot is in the D layer. (OB, right-down)

    U l' U2 l

Kind of a boring finish here, but, hey, not everything's flashy.

    y U M' U' M
    y' U L' U L U y' R U' R' (30 moves)

I'll surely do some more experimenting with CF2L, I know there's more that can be done to it. And yes, before anyone tells me, this may be kinda similar to Petrus, but this doesn't have the bad edges, and doesn't go by a strict system(not saying Petrus or Fridrich is strict for F2L, this is just a very free method, if you will), and is out there on it's own(to an extent).

Cross+F2L may be better for you, or it might not be. This isn't one of those horrid methods that involve a "KABAZILLIONMILLION ZOMG BUT IT TURNZ FAST THO"-lot of turns type-thing. Or, on the contrary, Petrus might be better for you.

The only reason I decided to share this with everybody is because I believe it has potential, given the certain cube positions(some might have a 2 move cross and no F2L slots ready to be easily paired), and looking ahead is very easy; you can look for CE pairs, or D layer edges.

I hoped this sparked interest in somebody, and PLEASE give me feedback/suggestions/etc. If you have any questions, just ask, and I'll do my best to sort everything out.

    Thanks,
Daniel AKA Dan da CF2L creatuh man

    1) What exactly is your method?
I'm seeing 2x2x2 + a cross edge, which I think a lot of cubers would do if they see a near-xcross, but no nice cross.

    2) Are you absolutely sure your algs are correct? I'm losing you at some point. And you didn't tell us you were doing cross on F. Not many people are color-neutral.
Could you type up a solution or two at http://alg.garron.us/? Use // and /**/ for comments in the solution.

    3) "CF2L" sounds like a cross between CF and F2L to me.

There may have been a trend to that 2x2x2 + cross edge, but it doesn't have to be that. It doesn't have to be 2x2x2 + anything. You have the follwing:

    CE pair
    CE pair
    CE pair
    CE pair
    D layer edge
    D layer edge
    D layer edge
    D layer edge

You place any of them in any order you want to. Whatever is quickest for you.

    2) What do you mean by algs? Do you mean solutions? I checked over them to see if the moves corresponded to what solution I was trying to get across. Also, I don't do cross on F. For speedsolving, I cross on D, it just turned out that they were crosses/2x2x2 blocks on F. And yes, I'll attempt typing up that solution.

    3) I had no idea what to name it, so I just picked something out.

why not call it RF2L? Random First 2 Layers.

it's not a terrible idea but I think it will be really hard to keep a nice turn rate throughout the solve because of the cube rotations and insane look ahead required.

Would you mind giving us links we can actually click on to see a solution? I can't seem to disentangle the correct URL
I recommend using the upper-right text field that says "Link for forums" when you hover over it; that's what it was made for.

I see what you mean to solve the parts of the F2L (4 cross edges + 4 corner/edge pairs) in whichever order is most convenient. This reminds me of partial cross, where you solve 2 or 3 cross edges, then being solving corner edge pairs and place any remaining cross edges either during this process or after.

It seems like a good idea, but I would recommend to do as many cross edges as can easily be done at the start rather than at the end where it will likely take more moves per cross piece to solve.

I think it's a good idea to be versatile like this, I recommend to solve this way.

I fixed that. It was my first time actually using that simulator.

And Chris points that out very well, it's versatile, but you don't necessarily need to use it all the time.

    I don't quite get it.
It's kinda freestyle, but not that free or efficient because you have to make vertical but not horizontal pairs. It seems almost like calling Fridrich and Salvia one method and also including anything else in between.

    Erik,

ROF2L! Random Order First 2 Layers. Now we just need to find a method called WTF2L.
