I believe solving big cubes blindfolded is quite an accomplishment. This thread will be similar to the "How many cubers have achieved sub15 OH?" thread. If you know of anyone who has achieved a successful blindfold solve in 6x6, 7x7, 8x8, or higher order cube post here and I will add them to the list. I am keeping track of the person's name, country, solve time, memorization time, and video links if available.

New BLD Scramble Notation + Statistics (TPA and TPT)

This is something I've been using for a while, and I haven't seen it anywhere else, so here it is:

When someone posts a BLD time with a scramble, I don't always want to do the scramble to see how easy the scramble was.

How easy a BLD scramble is is very objective however, and really only depends on the number of corner targets, the number of edge targets and the number of flipped/twisted pieces.

I propose that people start posting with their times/scrambles something that looks like this:

(# of corner targets)(One apostrophe for evey twisted corner)/(# of edge targets)(One apostrophe for evey flipped edge)

So for example, this scramble:

L2 U2 L2 F2 D2 F2 D2 U B2 U F2 R' U2 B U R2 F R2 D F R'

For me would be accompanied by the notation 7'/12 (edges are even # because of how I do parity)

Note that this would not be the same for everyone, but if people scramble in their solving orientation, it should be quite similar.

Now when I tell you that my time was 34.40[10.59] on that scramble, you know approximately how good my execution was.

This leads me to two statistics that accompany this notation quite nicely:

TPA = Time Per Alg = (execution time)/(# of algs)

For this scramble, I had 11 algs: 6 edge cycles, 3 corner cycles, parity and one corner twisting alg.

My TPA would then be (34.40 - 10.59)/11 = (23.81)/11 = 2.16 seconds/alg

For BLD, this is a much better way to rate someone's execution than TPS in my opinion, since BLD is about your transitions from one alg to the next more than it is about how fast you can turn.

TPT = Time Per Target = (Memo time)/(Number of targets + Number of twisted and flipped pieces)

For that scramble my TPT was 10.59/20 = 0.53 seconds per target. The denominator is 20 because I had 7 corner targets, 12 edge targets and one twisted corner.

I think TPT is a better way to look at memo than simply looking at the memorization speed, because not all scrambles are the same. Even though this solve had slower memo than the 26.70 I got here, I count it as a better memo since there were many more targets and the TPT is much lower.

Anyway, I hope these statistics help people relate times to scrambles better, and help explain why a lot of BLDers have negative reactions to fast solves and positive reactions to slow solves.

I have been practicing BLD edges (3OP). During my third look at the edge order for a solve an image of a cube pops into my head. It has the orientation that I use to solve for BLD (yellow top, blue front). Neon strands appear connecting each pair of edges that are part of the edge cycle.
The strand connecting the first and second edges was yellow.
The strand connecting the third and fourth edges was pink.
The strand connecting the fifth and sixth edges was purple.
The strand connecting the seventh and eighth edges was green.
The strand connecting the ninth and tenth edges was red.

I just solved it by moving from one strand to the next. When I took the blindfold off it was solved :)
Even 25 minutes after the solve I can vividly see the same cube with the neon strands in the same positions. The strands go through the cube and connect the pieces together. I can even rotate the cube in my head and the strands remain firmly in place.

I didn't choose any of the colors or even contemplate the idea before trying to use it. It just happened. Has anyone had an experience similar to this?

Both attempts were 12/14 and the second attempt was 20 seconds faster. This is also the most number of cubes attempted in North America. Tim started practicing BLD for the first time in the Winter and attempted 3MBLD in February so he has improved very quickly by any standard.

So i have just in the last few days began to pick up blind solving. im using OP for corners and edges and i pretty much get the idea. My memory is horrible, as im also a mixed martial artist and get punched in the head every day, so remembering things isnt exactly my specialization xD anyways, my questions include these:

i memo corners and then edges, solving edges first. Where can i find an in depth tutorial on parity for solving this way? like how to tell if you have it pre solve etc? it seems every time that i think there is parity, there is not, and when i think there is there isnt. my best solve so far is two edges swapped and two corners swapped, and i think i just dont understand the whole parity idea.

secondly, what is an easier way to distinguish letter pairs in words when memorizing for people who use it? i use audio for edges but many times when i use letter pairs for corners, il mix up my words. Say im using GirlFriend as my word for g and f, il accidently think its GirlfRiend, as in g and r. and so on and so on. is it just my horrid memory, or is there a way to make this easier?

sorry it was a lot of typing for two questions, i like to get my questions as clear as possible!

Thanks, Tom.

Beginner BLD scrambles

I'm just learning BLD, and I thought it might be helpful for me and other people if there was a collection of scrambles that didn't include cycle...

I'm just learning BLD, and I thought it might be helpful for me and other people if there was a collection of scrambles that didn't include cycle breaks, parity, twisted corners or flipped edges. Obviously a method and buffer position would have to be specified, but seeing as I think this is most use for beginners, and most beginners will be using Old Pochmann, or OP/M2, with UR/DF as an edge buffer and UBL as a corner buffer, it should be feasible.

So if anyone gets a scramble without these more difficult features when solved with OP or OP/M2, it'd be great if you post it here so that people just getting into BLD have a repository of scrambles to start with - just specify which edge method it's for. There's a few scrambles like this scattered around but nowhere that I could find that had a collection of them (if there is a collection somewhere, I'd appreciate being pointed in the right direction). I realise it might be hard to get sufficient support for this to work but if it does then I think it'll be a really good resource.

This was mostly for my benefit, but I have made some improvements to my original list of comms for wings. I've experimented with different algs for every case to find the fastest (and move-optimal if possible) alg for each cycle.

Clicky wicky woo

Improvements this time round:

1. Algs are now in commutator notation - saved so much time.
2. Comment section explains the trickier algs. It also explains why some of the faster algs are not move-optimal or vice versa and provides alternate algs.
3. The move-optimal column simply states whether the alg is move-optimal or not, obviously.
4. There are already a few lists for 3x3x3 edges out there that are much better than I could ever produce, so I've simply added a column that states if the 3-style alg can directly be applied to midges or 3x3x3 edges.
5. Because algs are now in commutator notation it also states whether cancellations need to be memorized to execute a cycle as fast as possible.

EDIT: You can now substitute the scheme for your own if you go to File -> Download as -> Excel file

Scrutinize at will, though I honestly think the vast majority are move-optimal and speed-optimal.
