TLDR: If you don't want to read it, read it or leave
First of all, I read on this forum quite a lot but I don't have enough experience so I cannot really say anything about it, but I just want to contribute somehow so I decided to put together this post so I write something too, because that is kind of the sense of a forum.
My first topic I am going to talk about are, as stated in the thread name, first impressions. I watched some cubing videos several years ago, then started playing videogames, then they started to bore me, so I looked back and thought about what I used to think about but couldn't do it because I was too young and stuff. So I remembered the cubing videos and bought a cube. I got extremely passionate about it since my first successful solve and I practice as much as I can since then. I think it's a great hobby to do, because unlike most of the videogames (apart from tetris) are not known by "normal" people, and most probably they tried to solve a cube too but couldn't, so they know how hard it is and respect you far more than for videogames. And on top of that, if you say you like solving cubes, it sounds far better that saying you spend your days playing videogames.
Also, I can be a part of a community, which is always very good fell anywhere, and speedcubing so far seems to have quite nice and intelligent community.
For the abilities it gives me, it is almost the same as videogames, both speedcubing and videogames improve mostly mobility of my fingers and eye to hand coordination. Videogames though give sometimes some moral lessons and learn you some other skills, but not in so big magnitude, so these can be neglected. Cubing on the other hand learns you very intensively memory skills with plenty of algorithms you have to learn, and I am not even considering blind solving. Additionally, cubing is somehow more rewarding, at least for me. Like, for example I feel much better when I reach a goal in speedcubing I was looking forward to for a week, than when I get an achievement I have been working for for one month.
To conclude, I think it was a good decision to start cubing and I can't wait to get better or maybe even very good in it.
So, that's it for now I guess. How would you compare cubing with other hobbies you do or did?
P.S.: I apologize if this topic was already discussed but I tried to search for it and even went through the SECOND page of results.

Here's the game's trailer. I have 28 hours clocked on steam but in reality I've played about 10-15, it's a game that I like to play in downtime/when I'm bored. It's a pretty fun game and similar to cubing in that you recognise patterns and try to react/decide fast enough. Here's the game's trailer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2sz0mI_6tLQ

Looks pretty easy until you try it. I've beaten level 1/2/3/4 and was within 5 seconds of beating level 5 when showing my friend some of the later levels.

The final level (the sixth) is pretty ridiculous.

This game was included in the Humble Bundle awhile ago, so I got it+7 other games for $6.50 iirc. I think standalone it's a dollar or two, and it's also on Android. Obviously there are free ways but I won't go into that here.

It's a fun, slightly competitive game with awesome music, if you haven't already you should try it.

So this is how it will work: (Scramble with White top Green front.)
1) I would post 12 scrambles with my times, and BR will post the same scrambles with his times.
2) Then the next day, BR would post new scrambles with his times and I would post the same scrambles with my times.
1)
2)
Keeps repeating until one of us get sub 20 avg of 12 5 times in a row.
Today, I will be posting the scrambles.

A Dayan Zhanchi!!!

I have wanted one for years. Literaly. And yesterday I got one!

We ordered it on Sunday last week from PUZL, they said they dispatched it on Monday, and it arrived on Wednesday morning. Good service, if you ask me, and AMAZING cube!

This thing is sooooooo fast, I cannot believe it! On my old Rubik's brand, I could hardly do any fingertricks. On here, I'm doing all sorts of triggers and other things after having it for only two days (I've been playing with it almost all day... and it's sitting on my desk as I type this!).

However, I do have some questions...

1. When the cube arrived, it appeared to have a broken torpedo. After removing the broken piece (which was jamming the cube), the cube seems to work fine without the torpedo. Should I do something about it, and if so what?

2. The cube is difficult to turn using wrist turns, so I have to use fingertricks. I'm getting the hang of it, but sometimes the wrong part of the cube swings round when I don't want it to (usually when reorientating the cube or moving my hand between algs). What can I do about this?

3. The cube was very smooth from the start, even though it hasn't been broken in. After using it solid for two days, there's still no cube dust, and no lube either. Should I be concerned?

4. Whenever I use fingertricks, my F2L lookahead falls down. Why, and how can I fix this?

Thanks,

Lately I've noticed some growing animosity on the forums between users of different methods. This seems to rear it's ugly head most frequently in the new member intro or request for advice threads... "don't use CFOP, go straight for Roux, CFOP is boring and "anyone who uses CFOP is a conformist!", says iluvRoux. "Don't listen to iluvRoux", says iCFOPpedurmom, "CFOP am the best method because Mats/Feliks/Adam (that's me, btw, I'm something of a pin-up to CFOP fanboys) uses it. Anyone who uses Roux is probably sexually ambiguous or a sociopath, or a sexually ambiguous sociopath"...

Yeah, there are pro's and con's to both methods, what's with all the hate? It's not Israel and Palestine, it's two different methods of solving a small plastic cube. Can't we all just get along?

Much love.

That is all.

I wanted a bunch of opinions and I figured that I could get some here, but I made sure to put this in the Off topic forums (although who's to say I'm not considering wearing this to my next competition? :p)

Anyway, does a burgundy red with blue and white plaid shirt work with a solid, Semi-bright red bowtie? At first I thought it'd be dreadful, but then I actually put it on, and I think it's kinda decent. Here are some pictures I took:

pictures:

And if it makes a difference, I'd be wearing khaki pants with this.
So yeah, how does this look? Is it terrible, or does it actually look okay? Also, would a dark blue (almost black) jacket be good with this? I think not, but I figured I'd ask anyway.

Hello!
I'm the editor in chief for my universitys economics student's magazine, and I have to publish a magazine for the newcomers of coming next year. I thought of adding a small bag full of paper confetti in the magazine, so that the reader can open up the bag, throw the confetti in the air and rejoice getting admitted to our university :D. Much better than the usual "congratulations" message they will hear a thousand times from everyone else.

For this I need around 150 small plastic pockets/bags that can be sealed. They need to be made from clear plastic and have to be around 5cmx5xm in size when closed. Basically bags that cube stickers are usually held in. I've no idea where to buy these, so if someone knows a shop online (that ships to Europe) that sells anything like it, could you please share?

I was also wondering what other famous cubers were pursuing besides cubing. :) full time body builders? Professional game developers? Scientists? Full time cubers, anyone? :)
Started this cos people could interact with other fellow members falling under the same profession, always good to have friends with similar interests! ;)

Btw, I'm doing my third year Pharm.D (Doctorate in pharmacy) :)
Details and download links are on my blog. Here's a thumbnail of the 24x36 poster:
